COAL TOWNSHIP — Maggie Hoffman-Long won a pair of events and helped the Minersville girls to a second-place finish at Wednesday’s five-team Purple Showdown track and field meet at Shamokin Area High School’s Kemp Memorial Stadium.
The meet featured competitors from Minersville, North Schuylkill, Berwick, Southern Columbia and the host Indians.
Hoffman-Long won the long jump and triple jump and was second in the 100-meter dash. The Miners’ Alyssa Cook placed first in pole vault by clearing 9 feet, 3 inches, while North Schuylkill’s Olivia Greblick took top honors in the 300 hurdles.
Minersville finished second in the girls’ team standings with 66 points, while North Schuylkill was fourth with 51.66 points. Shamokin won the girls’ title with 127.83 points.
On the boys’ side, North Schuylkill’s Luke Miller was the lone Spartan or Miner to win an event, taking first in the 100 in 10.88 seconds. Miller was also fourth in the 200.
Shamokin cruised to the boys’ team title, winning 14 of 17 events and compiling 161.75 points. Minersville was third (53.75), while North Schuylkill was fourth (40.25).
