About Pequea Valley

Nickname: Braves

Head coach: Jason McDonald (13th season, 178-134)

How they got here: District 3 runners-up decked District 12 third-seed Masterman 61-39 in Friday’s opening round

Projected Starting Five: PG Janae Patterson (jr., 19.4 ppg, 40 3s), G Katie Stoltzfus (sr., 9.9 ppg, 52 3s), G Trinity Rosa (sr., 7.6 ppg, 34 3s), G Morgan Graham (sr., 5.3 ppg, top defender), F Brianna Lourido (sr., 2.2 ppg)

Key reserves: G Sydney Roye (sr., 3.4 ppg, 14 3s), F Emily Eckenrode (sr., 3.4 ppg)

Fun Facts: Located in Kinzers in eastern Lancaster County, Pequea Valley is having its best season ever in girls’ basketball. Braves have established a program record for wins, won the school’s first-ever Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 title and reached the District 3 title game for the first time in program history. Win over Masterman was Pequea Valley’s first-ever PIAA playoff victory. …. Losses were to Exeter Township (52-34) in title game of Brandywin Heights holiday tournament, to Manheim Township (42-28) in Lancaster-Lebanon League quarterfinals and to Trinity (53-36) in District 3 Class 3A championship game at Giant Center in Hershey.

Game Notes / Breakdown

A matchup of two programs appearing on this type of playoff stage for the first time. How they handle those nerves, especially early, will be key part of game. ….. Senior-laden Pequea Valley is led by Patterson, who as a junior has 1,210 career points. She is the leading scorer in the Lancaster-Lebanon League at 19.4 points per game. ….. Braves like to shoot the 3-pointer, hitting a league-best 152 treys. Stoltzfus has 172 career 3-pointers, most in school history. ….. Hurricanes’ aggressive defense was on display in rout of Bodine at Martz Hall, as Haven opened game on 10-0 run, led 20-2 at one point and 37-9 at the half. Need to continue that aggressiveness defensively and on the boards, turning defense into offense. Haven must do little things — hit free throws, not turn the ball over, not get into foul trouble — and get scoring from several people to pull out victory.

About Williams Valley

Nickname: Vikings

Head coach: Shane Zellers

How they got here: District 11 champions defeated District 4 runner-up Northeast Bradford 49-46 in Friday’s opening round.

Projected starting five: G Mallory Miller (jr., 12.1 ppg, 4.2 apg, 2.1 rpg), G Ella Kobularik (jr., 3.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.4 apg), G Ireland Kasper (jr., 7.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.1 apg), F Quin Smeltz (jr., 6.2 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.1 apg), F Sage Smeltz (sr., 15.0 ppg, 7.9 rpg)

After hitting game-winning bucket Friday night, Sage Smeltz played the role of the priest in the school musical “Mamma Mia!” on Saturday and Sunday.

Game Notes / Breakdown

Matchup of two programs not familiar with the PIAA playoff stage. How they handle the atmosphere and pressure of a game of this magnitude will be interesting to see. ….. Shalom does not have a senior on its nine-girl roster, with juniors Rebok, Adams and Lehman leading the way scoring-wise. Rebok had 25 in D-3 semifinals against Lancaster Country Day (65-24 win), then 13 in D-3 final lost to York Catholic (55-39). She had 20 in PIAA first-round win. Adams has followed with 15, 10 and 25, while Lehman has scored 16, 6 and 13. Myers and Moore are team’s defensive stalwarts. ….. Flames closed game against SLA Beeber with 18-4 run after trailing entering the fourth. Shalom trailed 14-8 after one period, went up 25-24 at the half on a 3-pointer by Lehman, then trailed again after three frames. Trailed powerhouse York Catholic by one point at halftime of District 3 title game before Irish took control in second half. …. Return of Hechler from injury gives the Vikings some depth. Her speed gives a boost to Vikes’ transition game. …. Williams Valley has been able to excel late in its last two games, wins over Marian and Northeast Bradford. Need to maintain balanced attack, play aggressively in its zone defense and be more aggressive on the boards than it was against NEB.

Other notable win is 50-35 victory over District 4 runner-up Northeast Bradford.

Game Notes / Breakdown

Fillies will need to crank it up a couple of notches after blowout victory in first round. Marian had good balance against MaST Charter II with Addy Fritz (21), Olivia Serfass (14), Pugh (12) and Marek (12) all reaching double figures. Fillies are a better team when offense is balanced and will need that balance tonight against Elk Lake. ….. Fillies are a battle-tested program that has been here plenty of times before. Marian needs to block out the external “noise” and play solid fundamental basketball. ….. Warriors used a 12-1 run in the fourth quarter to beat Muncy. The game was tied 24-24 at the half before Muncy used a strong third quarter to take 34-30 lead. McGlynn, a physical center in the mold of Williams Valley’s Sage Smeltz, had 14 points while Traver and Shingler had nine and Casselbury eight. ….. Warriors like to shoot the 3-pointer, hitting 130 so far this season.

How they got here: District 11 runners-up defeated District 12 champion Motivation 49-34 in Saturday’s opening round.

Projected Starting Five: Giana Kasper (sr., 12.9 ppg, 15 3s), Abigail Wilson (10.7 ppg, 35 3s), Elyse Khachadourian (jr., 4.6 ppg), Paige Kreidler (jr., 4.6 ppg, 13 3s), Liah Cornelius (soph., 4.4 ppg)

Reached first-ever District 11 Class A championship game before losing to Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg 44-41. Win over Motivation was program’s first-ever PIAA playoff victory.

Game Notes/ Breakdown

Lourdes enters contest with a gigantic advantage in playoff experience and experience in big games in general. Red Raiders have a relatively youthful roster, but Klembara and his staff have been here plenty of times before and program is used to this type of success. Won’t be overwhelmed by the big stage, which might be the case with Panthers. ….. Kasper is Bethlehem Christian’s leading scorer. She’s scored in double digits 14 times, hitting 21 twice. She scored 20 points in District 11 semifinal win over Weatherly (47-21) and had 11 in district final. Wilson had 15 vs. Wreckers and 11 in district final, while Cornelius had 10 against NDES. …. Panthers don’t have the size to match up with Lokitis inside; Red Raiders need to exploit that mismatch.
