POTTSVILLE — Schuylkill Haven’s first PIAA girls’ basketball state playoff win in 40 years was a pretty easy one.

Alea Porter scored 16 points and Kylie Siket added 14 as the Schuylkill League champions cruised past the Bodine Ambassadors 51-15 on Friday night at Martz Hall.

The victory, Haven’s first state playoff win since the 1985 squad captured the PIAA Class A title, advances the Hurricanes (23-6) to Tuesday’s second round where they will play District 3 runner-up Pequea Valley, a 61-39 winner over Masterman.

Schuylkill Haven opened the game on a 10-0 run and compiled 25 first-quarter points. Porter, a senior guard, tallied 14 of her points in the outburst, including a 3-point play.

Siket and Anna Schaeffer combined for eight points, and Mckenna Runkle added a bucket to give the Hurricanes a 25-2 lead after the first frame.

Hanifah El-Martini scored the lone bucket for the Ambassadors at the four-minute mark.

“We just did our thing offensively and defensively,” Schuylkill Haven coach Tony Sanders said. “I’m proud of these girls and they work hard.”

The Hurricanes kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter, going 4-for-4 from the foul line and turning their defense into offense, scoring efficiently off steals.

Audrey Hutchinson and Siket each scored four points in the second quarter as the Hurricanes extended their lead to 37-9 at halftime.

The Ambassadors tallied seven points in the quarter, Alina Smith scoring four points and Mayonna Smith-Flower banking in a three-pointer.

Six Schuylkill Haven players scored in the second half and held Bodine to six points in the third period and zero in the fourth quarter.

Siket completed a three-point play, and Runkle and Porter each scored around the rim to give the Hurricanes the final points of this matchup.

“Coach always says to, ‘Let it fly,’ ” Porter said after her big night. “I just felt really confident with my shot and was happy I could contribute well tonight.”
