HERSHEY — Owen Woll and Bradley Renninger live to fight another day.
After falling in their first bouts Thursday at the PIAA Class 3A Wrestling Championships, both Blue Mountain standouts rebounded with victories in consolation matches at the end of a 13-hour Day 1 at the Giant Center.
In the round of 16, Woll did much of the attacking from neutral, but opportunistic defense gave Central Bucks West’s Chris Dennis a 6-3 decision. In the first period, Dennis got a takedown and a two-point near fall to take control of the match. Dennis escaped in the second period to up his lead to 6-0. Starting neutral in the third period, Woll scored a takedown with nine seconds left but ran out of time.

A 152-pound junior, Woll (42-8) kept his season alive by defeating Bethlehem Freedom’s Ivan Bonilla 4-2. Familiar foes, the two battled to a 1-1 tie midway through the third period. Woll then hit a single-leg shot and worked behind for the decisive takedown.
“It’s awesome. This environment is amazing,” Woll said. “I’m very grateful to be here and wrestling. It’s nice to get that first one out of the way.”
Next up for Woll is North Penn junior Jonny O’Brien (35-5) in the second round of consolations.

In his opener, Renninger, a senior 189-pounder, gave up an early takedown and had to battle from behind the rest of the match against Waynesburg Central’s Jake Stephenson. Renninger escaped in the second period to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Stephenson, a mixture of strength and quickness, netted another takedown to lead 6-2 after two periods. Starting neutral in the third period, Renninger got in deep on an ankle pick and tried two upper-body throws but couldn’t convert any of the opportunities.
Renninger (43-11) won the upper-body battle against Interboro’s Franco Latorre in the consolations, converting a bearhug for the first takedown and staying away from Latorre’s throws. Renninger added another takedown, four back points and a reversal before pinning Latorre at 4:32.
In the second round of consolations, Renninger will meet Strath Haven junior Michael Spielman (41-7).
“Amazing, considering how bad my first match went for me,” Renninger said. “I could have wrestled better, so I wrestled better this time. It feels great that I didn’t end on a bad note.”
The Class 3A wrestlers return for Day 2 at 2:15 p.m. for the championship quarterfinals and second round of consolations. The third round of consolations will follow at 4:45 p.m. The championship semifinals are set for 7 p.m., with the fourth round of consolations at 9 p.m.
