HS Wrestling: Pine Grove’s Martin earns 100th win

HERSHEY — Pine Grove senior Austin Martin went 4-1 with four falls to help Pine Grove gain a third-place finish Saturday at the Hershey Duals.

Martin’s final victory of the day marked the 100th of his varsity career. Wrestling at 160 and 172 pounds, he improved his season record to 27-4 and his career mark to 100-44. Martin became the fourth Schuylkill League wrestler to reach the century mark this season, joining Blue Mountain’s Bradley Renninger and Owen Woll and Tamaqua’s Aiden Schlier.

Robbie Schaeffer (215) went 5-0 with two pins, a technical fall and two decisions for the Cardinals (13-5). Pine Grove defeated Milton Hershey (51-15), Kennard-Dale (33-32), Dover (50-18) and Littlestown (37-31). Hershey topped the Cardinals 54-15.

Gage Cleary (127), James Hoy (133) and Scout Frantz (285) posted 4-1 records for Pine Grove. Conan DeBruyn went 2-0 with two pins at 139.

place at Bedford tourney

BEDFORD — Owen Wolfgang (107) and Noah Hanlon (145) earned fourth-place medals for Tri-Valley at the Thomas Automotive Wrestling Tournament at Bedford High School.

Hanlon had a 6-2 record on the weekend.

North Schuylkill had four placewinners: Bryce Kile (139) in fifth, Cadyn McGraw (215) in sixth, Sander Stokes (285) in seventh and Gaige Mentusky (107) in eighth.

Burrell won the team title with 183 points, just edging runner-up Chestnut Ridge with 182.5. Clearfield (172), Greenville (158) and Huntingdon (144) rounded out the top five in the 30-team field. North Schuylkill finished 11th; Tri-Valley placed 12th.

3 place at Coal Cracker

LEHIGHTON — Owen Woll captured a fifth-place medal at 152 pounds for Blue Mountain at the Coal Cracker Boys’ Wrestling Tournament at Lehighton Area High School.

Woll advanced to the semifinals before dropping a bout. He went 5-2 in the event.

Mahanoy Area’s Rory Dixon (160) and Williams Valley’s Magnus Monger (107) took eighth-place medals in the 58-team field.

Faith Christian crowned eight champions and cruised to the team title with 344 points. Central Dauphin finished second with 159.5, with Montgomery (152), Wyoming Seminary (141.5) and Wilson West Lawn (137) completing the top five. Blue Mountain placed 28th, Williams Valley 37th, Tamaqua 45th, Mahanoy Area 47th and Panther Valley 58th.

Panthers’ Banks gains gold at tourney

DOYLESTOWN — Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks won a pair of matches by fall Sunday to capture the 235-pound championship at the Battle for the Buck Tournament at Central Bucks West High School.

Banks decked Council Rock’s Makenzie O’Donnell in 58 seconds, then pinned DePaul Catholic’s Caroline Biegel in 2:28.

Panther Valley junior Brenda Banks took the 235-pound title Sunday at the Battle for the Buck Tournament at Central Bucks West High School.

Souderton topped the 32-team event with 157 points. Central Bucks West finished second with 110 points, and Owen J. Roberts (99) Exeter Township (82.5) and Pennsbury (79.5) completed the top five. Pine Grove (76.5) finished sixth, and Panther Valley (74) took eighth.

Also for the Panthers, Alisa Williams (170) finished second, and Kyla McQuillen (136) placed third.

Pine Grove had four placewinners: Geanna Lemke, second at 142; Eve Kurtz, third at 148; Samantha Eisenhauer, fourth at 136; and Audrey Graeff, fifth at 235.
