Ready for a trip down memory lane?
With the Schuylkill League Wrestling Championships set for Saturday at Blue Mountain High School (action will begin at 9 a.m.; championship finals at 2:30 p.m.), this was the perfect time to pull out heavy boxes of binders from my basement and list the history of the annual league gathering back to 1997. (Anyone with full results prior to that year, I would be thrilled to access them and add those years to the list below. Contact me at blipsky@pbcradio.com.)
According to available records, just 16 of the thousands who have competed over the decades became four-time Schuylkill League champions. That list includes:
-
Steve Cesari, North Schuylkill, 1982-85
-
J.J. Fasnacht, Pine Grove, 1988-91
-
Kirk Stehman, Shamokin, 1989-92
-
Mike Garcia, Mount Carmel, 1991-94
-
Brian Burns, Pottsville, 1998-2001
-
Matt Edwards, North Schuylkill, 1999-2002
-
Chris Renninger, Blue Mountain, 2002-05
-
Jeremy Cresswell, Blue Mountain, 2002-05
-
Josh Malick, Mount Carmel, 2005-08
-
Cort Choate, Blue Mountain, 2006-09

Upper Dauphin’s Jeff Eure, Kindig and Keener went on to win two state titles apiece.
Scrolling through the years, several interesting names popped up.
Here are a few:
2002 — North Schuylkill’s Corey Fetterolf posts a 10-2 major decision over Pottsville’s Pat Paulo to capture the 112-pound championship. Today, Fetterolf is the head wrestling coach at his alma mater and will lead the Spartans into competition Saturday.
2003 — Blue Mountain’s Sam Julian decisions North Schuylkill’s Jared Brown 4-1 for the 112-pound title. Today, Julian is an educator, former long-time coach and current international and Olympic wrestling official.
2006 — Schuylkill Haven’s Mike Rollman pins Mount Carmel’s Mike McCollum in 5:31 for the 275-pound crown. Today, Rollman is the head coach of the Blue Mountain high school softball team, the two-time defending PIAA Class 4A state champions.
2011 — Williams Valley’s Ben Ancheff tops North Schuylkill’s Tyler Dean 11-2 for the 285-pound championship. The previous two years, Ancheff was league runner-up to Shamokin’s Wes Tillett both seasons. Today, Ancheff is the Athletic Director at Williams Valley High School and the Schuylkill League committee chairman for wrestling.
