HS Basketball Roundup: Golden Bears outlast Eagles to remain unbeaten

ORWIGSBURG — Mahanoy Area’s transition from the small-school division to Division I of the Schuylkill League in boys’ basketball continues to go well.

The Golden Bears completed an unbeaten run through the first half of the league slate Thursday with a 51-37 road victory at Blue Mountain. The win improved Mahanoy Area to 13-0 overall and 7-0 in league play.

Tanner Zawada had eight of game-high 22 points in the first quarter as Mahanoy Area opened a quick 13-8 lead. The senior guard was then 8-for-8 from the foul line in the second half as the Golden Bears used a 16-6 run in the fourth quarter to ice it.

Jace Yedsena collected 14 points for Mahanoy Area. Tyeirre Meade and Chase Guers each had eight points to lead Blue Mountain.

TAMAQUA — Noah Mateyak poured in 27 points and Cooper Ansbach added 21 as the Blue Raiders held off a late North Schuylkill charge to pick up their fourth straight win.

Luke Kane added nine points for Tamaqua, which led 51-41 entering the fourth quarter. Zack Marcinowski hit four 3-pointers and finished with 27 points for the Spartans.

MINERSVILLE — Shazier Bethea and Dante Carr each scored 13 points as the Miners won their fifth straight with a Division I win over the Cardinals.

Bethea had 10 of his points and Carr added eight in the first half as Minersville opened up a 34-15 lead by intermission. Chase Sarge paced Pine Grove with seven points.

HEGINS — Blake Schwartz tallied a game-high 25 points as the Dawgs fended off the Hurricanes in a Division II contest.

Schwartz had eight points in the third quarter, keying a 20-10 Tri-Valley run that helped the Dawgs overcome a 27-22 halftime deficit. Braeden Doyle added 13 points for Tri-Valley, which stayed tied atop the Division II standings with Nativity.

Max Heim and Alan Evans both scored 20 points for Schuylkill Haven, which dropped its sixth straight.

TOWER CITY — Ian McKeegan and Niko Saldukas each netted 23 points as the Wreckers rolled past the Vikings in a Division II game.

Corbin Wagner added 13 points, scoring 11 points in the first half as the Wreckers built a 29-14 halftime lead. McKeegan and Saldukas then combined for 29 points in the second half to keep Weatherly ahead.

Brady Shomper led Williams Valley with 15 points.

SHAMOKIN — Trey Keating scored 21 points in an explosive first half as the Hilltoppers downed the Red Raiders in a Division II game.

The teams combined for 77 points in the opening half, with Nativity leading 39-36 at intermission. Keating finished with 29 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Jason Bowman added 10 points for Nativity, which improved to 6-1 in league play.

Gaven Renn and Johnny Rishel each had 18 points for Lourdes.
