Weekend Roundup: Cards give Rizzo 1st coaching victory

HEGINS — A quick start gave Allison Rizzo her first victory as the Pine Grove girls’ basketball coach Saturday afternoon.
Addie Zimmerman paced a balanced attack with 11 points as Pine Grove downed Tri-Valley 41-21 in a non-league girls’ basketball contest. Hollyn Sampson added 10 points as the Cardinals opened the game on a 17-6 run and led 29-8 at the half.
Avery Miller led Tri-Valley with a game-high 12 points.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — McKenna Runkle compiled a game-high 14 points, 10 rebounds and six steals as the Hurricanes rallied past the Golden Bears in a non-league game Saturday afternoon.
Runkle had six of her points in the fourth quarter, when Schuylkill Haven used a 14-8 run to seize the victory. Alea Porter added 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals for the Hurricanes, who trailed 19-12 at halftime.
Felicia Bro paced Mahanoy Area with 13 points while Naomi Kowalick added 12.

MAHANOY CITY — Jace Yedsena and Tanner Zawada picked up right where they left off last season, combining to score 50 points in the Golden Bears’ season-opening win over Salisbury on Saturday.
Yedsena finished with a game-high 28 points, scoring nine in the first quarter and 15 in the third quarter. Zawada tallied 22, eight coming in the fourth quarter. The pair combined to hit nine 3-pointers.
Ryan Zilker added 10 points for Mahanoy Area. Steven Lozada (11), Drew Petrie (10) and Keaton Frye (10) reached double figures for Salisbury.
