Friday, Nov. 15, marked the official opening of winter sports practice.

Teams basically have two weeks to get ready for a season that will span the dark, frigid months of December, January and February and end in brighter, often-more-moderate March temperatures.

To get ready, let’s take a look at some of the key dates throughout the upcoming season.

*Nov. 30 — Williams Valley opens the season for the local teams at Catasauqua’s Rough Rider Tournament.

*Dec. 3 — Interesting duals here: Parkland at Blue Mountain, Shamokin at North Schuylkill and a boys’-girls’ doubleheader, Pine Grove at Schuylkill Valley.

*Dec. 7 — Pottsville hosts the annual Case-Flynn Duals at Martz Hall.

*Dec. 11 — Blue Mountain at Pottsville highlights the first round of Schuylkill League dual meets.

*Dec. 13 — Blue Mountain hosts its annual PM Gauntlet. Tri-Valley will compete there, too. The Tamaqua Girls’ Wrestling Tournament will be held as well.

*Dec. 14 — Mahanoy Area, Panther Valley and Williams Valley participate in the Tamaqua Blue Raider Duals.

*Dec. 20-21 — Pottsville tests itself at the powerhouse King of the Mountain Tournament at Central Mountain High School.

*Dec. 27-28 — Mahanoy Area, North Schuylkill, Panther Valley, Pottsville, Tamaqua and Williams Valley take part in the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament.

*Jan. 4 — Pottsville hosts Williams Valley and others at the Mats on the Mecca Duals at Martz Hall.

*Jan. 18 — Blue Mountain hosts the annual Schuylkill League Wrestling Championships.

*Jan. 24-25 — Blue Mountain, Mahanoy Area, Panther Valley, Tamaqua and Williams Valley are part of a huge field at the Coal Cracker Wrestling Tournament at Lehighton. On that same weekend, North Schuylkill and Tri-Valley make their traditional trip west to the Thomas Chevrolet Wrestling Tournament at Bedford High School.

*Feb. 1 — District 11 Team Wrestling Championships (District Duals) are set for Bethlehem Freedom High School.

*Feb. 16 — Easton hosts the District 11 Girls’ Wrestling Championships.

*Feb. 21-22 — Bethlehem Freedom and Liberty host the District 11 Class AA and 3A Boys’ Wrestling Championships.

*Feb. 23 — Quakertown is the site for the Southeast Regional Girls’ Wrestling Championships.

*Feb. 28-March 1 — Bethlehem Freedom and Liberty host the Southeast AA and Northeast 3A Boys’ Wrestling Championships.

*March 6-8 — Hershey’s Giant Center once again is the site of the PIAA Championships as the Class AA boys’, Class 3A boys’ and combined girls’ divisions share the six mats to crown state champions and medalists.
