SHENANDOAH — Both Panther Valley and Shenandoah Valley have not had much to celebrate this season.

The Panthers came into Friday night’s Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division contest with just one win and have been playing without a true quarterback since the fourth week.

The winless Blue Devils have not been competitive for the most part, but they had some optimism of putting one in the plus column in their final home game against the Panthers considering that team’s record.

But Shenandoah Valley didn’t have many opportunities to put together scoring drives. That’s because Panther Valley dominated the time of possession with an all-running attack and put together a strong defensive effort in securing a 32-0 victory.

The Panthers gained all but nine of their 289 total yards on the ground and chewed up so much of the clock that they allowed the Blue Devils just three offensive possessions in the first half.

Even with that, Panther Valley could only muster a 17-yard touchdown run and ensuing 2-point conversion run by Brennan Kunkel on the game’s opening drive to take an 8-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Kunkel rushed for 110 yards on 22 carries and played quarterback for most of the game even though he is listed as a wide receiver.

“We were a little bit disappointed in the first half,” Panther Valley coach Mark Lavine said. “We wanted more than a one-score lead, but that means they’re one play away from popping one and tying it up.”

Shenandoah Valley could manage just six yards of total offense while being limited to just four offensive possessions in the second half.

The Panthers doubled the score to 16-0 on their opening third-quarter possession when Marcus Rodriguez’s 7-yard touchdown run and ensuing 2-point conversion pass from Brady Jones to Logan Fisher capped a nine-play, 54-yard drive.

“We have quarterback issues obviously, and Kunkel is a great team player,” Lavine said. “We’ve been juggling different guys all year long. And we dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage. Our defense did such a good job.”

The Panthers put the game away with two fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kunkel two Jeremy Phelps, and a 4-yard run by Troy Nunez, who also ran for a 2-point conversion run along with Jones.

Shenandoah Valley coach David Bench said his team could have gotten back in the game with a stronger offensive effort.

“We came out flat in the second half and had too many missed tackles on defense,” Bench said. “That’s been our Achilles’ heel all season long. We just have to continue mixing up the defense and put our younger kids in to get them more work.”

The Blue Devils will finish the season on the road with games at Williams Valley and rival Mahanoy Area.

Panther Valley will host its final two regular-season games against Mahanoy Area and Minersville, respectively.
