Thursday night roundup: Schuylkill League soccer, volleyball playoffs set

Haven, Tri-Valley boys’ soccer, Tri-Valley girls’ soccer, Nativity volleyball earn league playoff berths

The Schuylkill League soccer and volleyball playoffs are set.

The Schuylkill Haven boys, Tri-Valley boys and Tri-Valley girls clinched league soccer playoff berths with victories Thursday, while Nativity grabbed the final spot in the Schuylkill League volleyball playoffs with a win over Williams Valley.

The Schuylkill League soccer playoffs begin Saturday with four quarterfinal contests at Blue Mountain’s Eagles Nest. Tickets cost $6 for adults and $3 for students. There is not a senior citizen discount.

The schedule is as follows:

9 a.m. (Boys) — Schuylkill Haven (D-II runner-up) vs. North Schuylkill (D-I No. 3)

11 a.m. (Boys) — Blue Mountain (D-I runner-up) vs. Tri-Valley (D-II No. 3)

1:30 p.m. (Girls) — North Schuylkill (D-I runner-up) vs. Williams Valley (D-II No. 3)

3:30 p.m. (Girls) — Tri-Valley (D-II runner-up) vs. Blue Mountain (D-I No. 3)

Here’s a look at Thursday’s local results:

Girls’ Volleyball­

Panther Valley 3, Pottsville 2 — Morgan Orsulak compiled 18 kills, 25 assists, 12 digs and four aces as the Panthers overcome a two-set deficit to knock off the Tide 23-25, 18-25, 26-23, 25-19, 16-14 in a Schuylkill League Division I thriller in Lansford.

Natalie Vermillion added 16 kills and 13 digs for Panther Valley (12-2 D-I), while Caroline Breslin added 39 digs.

Megan Yost had 26 digs, 46 assists, two aces and two digs for Pottsville (13-1 D-I), while Lainey Dusel had 12 kills and 20 digs and Rhyan Brennan collected 13 kills, 21 digs and six aces.

Pottsville won JV 2-0.

Nativity 3, Williams Valley 1 — Julianna Carlson notched 20 kills as the Green Wave clinched a Schuylkill League playoff berth with a 18-25, 25-13, 25-12, 25-13 victory over the Vikings atop Lawton’s Hill.

Sara Spolski added 10 kills, 11 digs, four aces and two assists for Nativity (10-4 D-II), which will face Division I runner-up Panther Valley in Monday’s quarterfinals at Minersville. Addisan Ricard collected 36 assists, 15 digs and two aces, while Amara Miller had 10 digs and three aces.

Emily Miller paced Williams Valley (3-11 D-II) with three kills and 18 digs, while Emma Reinoehl had two kills and Haley Rivera tallied six assists and six digs.

Nativity won JV 2-0.

Tri-Valley 3, Minersville 0 — Callie Melocheck recorded four aces and 32 assists as the Dawgs downed the Miners 25-14, 25-22, 25-6 in a Division II contest in Hegins.

Liv Lupole notched 11 kills and had three aces and nine digs for Tri-Valley (12-2 D-II), while Ellie Dunkelberger and Faith Melocheck each had eight kills and two aces.

Ayla Castle had 11 assists, nine digs and two aces for Minersville (6-8 D-II), while Lydia Harris collected five kills and nine digs and Hailey Croley had four kills and six digs.

Tri-Valley’s JV team wrapped up an undefeated season with a 2-0 victory.

Mahanoy Area 3, Tamaqua 2 — The playoff-bound Bears wrapped up the regular season with a 25-7, 25-14, 25-13 win over the Blue Raiders.

Caylin Blashock had 13 kills and three blocks for Mahanoy Area, while Carly Honus collected six kills and three digs and Lexi Chilinskas dished out 23 assists and had five aces.

Kelsey Lusch had seven digs for Tamaqua, while Madison Schock collected four assists, four digs and two aces and Nicole Mushock had five digs and two blocks.

Mahanoy Area won JV 2-0.

Pine Grove 3, Lourdes 0 — Domani Collazo notched 13 kills, three aces and three blocks as the Cardinals cruised past the Red Raiders in a Division I contest in Pine Grove.

Tori Schaeffer added eight aces, two kills and two digs for the Cardinals (8-6 D-I), while Lily Flynn had eight kills and two aces.

Anna Keer had four kills, two aces, two blocks and six digs for Lourdes (3-11 D-I), while Anna Krebs collected two kills, seven assists and seven digs and Corinne Feese had eight digs.

Pine Grove won JV 2-0.

Marian 3, Weatherly 0 — Eris Hayes compiled three kills, 12 assists, seven aces and three digs as the Fillies defeated the Wreckers 25-15, 25-8, 25-9 in a Division II contest in Hometown.

Zoe Katona added two kills for Division II champion Marian (13-1 D-II). Kaiya Kunkle had three sevice points, three assists and two digs, Kelly Reiner had two service points and four digs, and Abby Teodorescu had two service points, two aces, two kills and four digs for Weatherly (2-12 D-II).

Schuylkill Haven 3, Shenandoah Valley 0 — In Shenandoah, Karlee Feger had 11 kills, four aces and five digs as the Hurricanes rolled past the Devils 25-14, 25-13, 25-10 in a Division II contest.

Jolynn Ross added 20 assists, 11 digs, two aces and two blocks for Schuylkill Haven (9-5 D-II), while Teagan Wehr had 19 digs, six assists and three aces.

Brianna Gulden had 10 digs, Katrina McNulty had seven digs and Kaye Lynn Sheehan tallied four assists and three kills for the Blue Devils (1-13 D-II).

Shenandoah Valley won JV 2-1.

Final Schuylkill League Girls’ Volleyball Standings

Division I — Pottsville 13-1, Panther Valley 12-2, Mahanoy Area 9-5, Blue Mountain 8-6, Pine Grove 8-6, Lourdes 3-11, North Schuylkill 2-12, Tamaqua 0-14

Division II — Marian 13-1, Tri-Valley 12-2, Nativity 10-4, Schuylkill Haven 9-5, Minersville 6-8, Williams Valley 3-11, Weatherly 2-12, Shenandoah Valley 1-13

Boys’ Soccer

Schuylkill Haven 2, Williams Valley 0 — Carter Daniel scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart as the Hurricanes (9-3 D-II) locked up the No. 2 spot from Division II for the Schuylkill League playoffs.

Daniel’s first goal came on a penalty kick at 56:39, while Luke Smith assisted on Daniel’s second goal at 58:24. Gavin Wade stopped all three Williams Valley shots to notch the shutout.

Xzavion Tennis made seven saves in net for the Vikings (4-8 D-II).

Tri-Valley 8, Nativity 2 — Nathan Hillard scored five goals and assisted on another as the Dawgs rolled past the Green Wave atop Lawton’s Hill to wrap up a Schuylkill League playoff spot.

Tyler Mowery, Gavin Ballay and Lukas Ruch added goals for Tri-Valley (8-4 D-II), while Garett Leitzel had two assists and Dalton Leitzel, Zaiden Shiffer and Dawson Neugard also had assists. Goalkeeper Brayden Leese stopped four Nativity shots.

J. Kim and M. Ariando scored goals for Nativity (1-11 D-II), while keeper Nick Clarke made seven saves.

Shenandoah Valley 5, Minersville 0 — Joan Menjivar scored three goals to power Shenandoah Valley past Minersville in a Division II match and complete an unbeaten league schedule.

Ayden Zamudio added two goals and one assist for the Blue Devils (12-0 D-II).

Caleb Campos made four saves to earn the shutout in goal. Robert McGrath stopped 12 shots for Minersville (7-5 D-II).

In other Schuylkill League boys’ soccer action Thursday, Pottsville topped Marian 4-0.
