Blue Mountain advances in D-11 girls’ tennis playoffs

ORWIGSBURG — Leah Walasavage, Natalie Brown and Mary Solga scored singles victories as Blue Mountain defeated Notre Dame-Green Pond 5-0 in a District 11 Class AA Girls’ Tennis Team Tournament quarterfinal Monday.

Walasavage, Brown and Solga each won in straight sets, while the Eagles’ two doubles teams were also victorious. The victory advances the fourth-seeded Eagles (10-5) to today’s semifinals where they will play at top-seeded Moravian Academy, which downed No. 8 Tamaqua 5-0 in Monday’s quarterfinals. No. 2 Allentown Central Catholic and No. 3 Saucon Valley will meet in today’s other semifinal.

Girls’ Soccer

North Schuylkill 11, Shenandoah Valley 0 — Lilah Helwig collected four goals and four assists as the Spartans wrapped up the No. 2 playoff berth in Division I with a Schuylkill League win over the Blue Devils at Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium.

Addie Urban added three goals and three assists for North Schuylkill (10-1 D-I), while Marlie White had a goal and an assist. Jillian Murray, Samantha Staconis and Kyla Yesalusky each added a goal, while Abrielle Klingerman had an assist.

North Schuylkill will play the Division II third-place team, either Minersville, Tri-Valley or Williams Valley, in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 5 p.m. at Blue Mountain’s Eagles’ Nest in Orwigsburg. Blue Mountain is the No. 3 team from Division I and will play the Division II runner-up (either Minersville, Tri-Valley or Williams Valley) in the other girls’ quarterfinal Saturday at 3 p.m.

Sami Cortes made 20 saves for Shenandoah Valley (1-9 D-I).

 

Pottsville 6, Tamaqua 1 — Abbie Davis had a pair of goals and Lauren Goodman had a pair of assists as the Tide topped the Blue Raiders in a Schuylkill League Division I match at Alumni Field.

Aubrey Snyder, Julie Stock, Kailey Olenick and Jes Siminitus added goals for Pottsville (12-4-1, 10-1 D-I), while Lauren Kelly, Cami Quirin-Morris, Olenick and Bella Wright tallied assists. Aubrey Scanlan (3) and Rose Russell (1) combined to make four saves for the Tide.

Sophia Sitlinger dashed Pottsville’s shutout bid with an unassisted goal with 33 seconds remaining. Veronica Scott made 14 saves in net for Tamaqua (3-8 D-I).

In other Schuylkill League girls’ soccer action Monday, Schuylkill Haven edged Tri-Valley 4-3, Pine Grove blanked Marian 6-0 and Williams Valley downed Lourdes 6-1.

Moravian Academy 2, Blue Mountain 1, 2OT — At Bethlehem, Elena Reid’s goal in the second overtime lifted Moravian Academy past Blue Mountain in a non-league contest.

Caitlyn McGhee gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead before Angel Deluhery tied it with a first-half goal. The game stayed knotted until Reid converted a pass from Deluhery to win it.

MaKayla Keck made seven saves in net for Blue Mountain.

Palmerton 3, Minersville 1 — At Palmerton, Kloee Horoschak’s goal at 21:51 gave the Miners an early lead, but the Bombers tallied three second-half goals to capture the non-league victory. Olivia Kopinetz made 15 saves in net for Minersville.

Girls’ Volleyball

Tri-Valley 3, Halifax 0 — At Hegins, Kirra Klinger recorded five aces and 13 digs as the Dawgs downed the Wildcats 25-12, 25-7, 25-10.

Faith Melocheck had nine kills for Tri-Valley, while Callie Melocheck compiled four aces, 20 assists and seven digs. Tri-Valley won JV 2-0.

North Schuylkill 3, Minersville 1 — At Fountain Springs, Kyla Carado notched 13 kills and had three blocks and three aces as the Spartans outlasted the Miners 25-10, 25-23, 24-26, 25-11 in a non-league match.

Emily Walsh added eight kills and two blocks for North Schuylkill, while Raven Marlow collected seven aces and 22 assists. For Minersville, Hailey Croley had six kills and 11 digs; Ayla Castle dished out 19 assists and had eight digs; and Lydia Harris comipled seven kills and 19 digs.

North Schuylkill won JV 2-0.

Schuylkill Haven 3, Tamaqua 0 — Karlee Feger recorded 11 kills, three aces and three digs as the Hurricanes swept the Blue Raiders 25-13, 25-23, 25-13 in a non-league contest.

Jolynn Ross compiled seven aces, thee digs and 18 assists for Schuylkill Haven, while Teagan Wehr had 11 digs and two assists.

Isidora Neifert had five kills for Tamaqua, while Leah Black tallied three kills and nine digs and Madison Schock tallied three aces, six assists and two digs.

Schuylkill Haven won JV 2-0.

Weatherly 3, Williams Valley 1 — In Tower City, Rachel Rosenlund racked up 14 service points and had three kills, four aces and 14 assists as the Wreckers topped the Vikings 25-17, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19 in a Schuylkill League Division II match.

Abby Weston added 11 service points, five aces, two kills and nine digs for Weatherly, while Kaiya Kunkle had 10 service points, three aces, four kills and four digs.

Audrina Fry paced Williams Valley with seven kills, while Hayley Ferguson had six kills and three blocks; Emily Miller had four kills, five aces and 19 digs; and Naomi Carl collected five aces, two kills, four assists and seven digs.

Marian 3, Notre Dame-Green Pond 2 — At Easton, Alena Lombardo recorded 10 kills and 10 blocks as the Fillies overcame a two-set deficit to beat the Crusaders 25-27, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19, 15-5 in a non-league marathon.

Eris Hayes dished out 39 assists and had three kills and seven digs for Marian, while Kali Grochowski added nine kills and 16 digs; Isabella Horvat compiled six kills, three aces and 35 digs; Lara Cancio had eight kills and four digs; and Maddy Davis had five kills and seven digs.

Notre Dame-Green Pond won JV 2-0.

Pine Grove 3, ELCO 2 — In Myerstown, Domani Collazo notched 16 kills, seven blocks, four aces and five digs in the Cardinals’ 18-25, 25-21, 25-14, 18-25, 15-13 non-league war with the Raiders.

Mary Fertig racked up 27 assists for Pine Grove, while Lily Flynn had five kills, four digs and two blocks. Keirra Sholl had 13 kills, four aces and 16 digs for ELCO, while Julia Webber had 35 assists. Pine Grove won JV 2-0.
