North Schuylkill locks up Schuylkill League boys’ soccer playoff spot
North Schuylkill 3, Tamaqua 2 — North Schuylkill is in the Schuylkill League boys’ soccer playoffs.
Fabrizio Manganiello’s goal in the 50th minute broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Spartans past Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League Division I match Saturday at Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium.
The victory gives North Schuylkill (10-6, 7-4 D-I) the third playoff berth from Division I, joining division champion Pine Grove and runner-up Blue Mountain. The Spartans will face the Division II runner-up in the league quarterfinals Saturday, Oct. 12, at Blue Mountain’s Eagles Nest.
Goals by Zack Marcinowski and Manganiello gave North Schuylkill a 2-0 halftime lead. Max Helwig and Logan Walacavage had assists. Tamaqua (3-12-1, 2-7-1 D-I) rallied to tie the game in the second half on goals a minute apart by Chase Behr and Aiden Schlier. Manganiello’s second goal, off an assist by Brady Welker, put North Schuylkill ahead to stay.
Kaden Onuschak had seven saves in net for North Schuylkill, while Nicholas Barron stopped 11 shots for Tamaqua.
Schuylkill Haven 3, Pottsville 0 — Carter Daniel had a goal and an assist as the Hurricanes blanked the Crimson Tide (1-14-1) in a non-league match Saturday at Alumni Field.
Alex Koch and Chase Fisher also scored for Schuylkill Haven (11-5), while Grayson Fessler had two assists. Gavin Wade posted the shutout with five saves.
Tri-Valley 4, Marian 1 — Nathan Hillard scored four straight goals in the second half as the Dawgs (9-6-1) overcame a halftime deficit to beat the Colts in Hometown.
Edison Mitchell’s goal off an assist from Jake Tom in the 15th minute helped Marian (3-13) take a 1-0 halftime lead. Hillard then got hot, scoring four times in a 13-minute span, including two on penalty kicks. Lukas Ruch and Garett Leitzel had assists.
Girls’ Soccer
North Schuylkill 5, Tamaqua 0 — Lilah Helwig scored three first-half goals and Mylee Bindie tallied two second-half markers as the Spartans (12-4, 8-3 D-I) blanked the Blue Raiders in a Schuylkill League Division I match at Tamaqua.
Helwig scored at 22:55, 27:13 and 28:37. Marlie White and Addie Urban recorded assists for North Schuylkill. Both of Bindie’s goals came off corner kicks, at 44:55 and 49:55.
Maddie Moyer stopped three shots in net for the Spartans. Veronica Scott had five saves for Tamaqua (4-11, 3-6 D-I).
Blue Mountain 2, Conrad Weiser 1 — At the Eagles’ Nest, Caitlyn McGhee and Hailey Scheuer tallied goals as the Eagles edged the Scouts in a non-league tussle.
Kendall Koch and Alex Warke recorded assists for Blue Mountain (11-5). Goalkeeper Makayla Keck made eight saves. Cara Pearsall scored the lone goal for Conrad Weiser.
Girls’ Volleyball
Panther Valley 3, Nativity 0 — At Lansford, Morgan Orsulak had 14 kills, 13 digs, six aces and six assists as the Panthers swept the Green Wave 25-20, 25-15, 25-15 in a non-league match that could be a possible Schuylkill League playoff preview.
Caroline Breslin added 11 digs and three aces for Panther Valley, while Abby Benack had 10 assists and six digs. Sara Spolski paced Nativity with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Addison Ricard had 13 assists and three digs and Morgan Howell collected 18 digs.
Lehighton 3, Nativity 2 — At Lansford, the Green Wave were swept in the non-league doubleheader, falling 17-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-11, 15-10 to the Indians.
Spolski had a second double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs for Nativity (8-8), while Ricard had 26 assists, nine digs and two aces, Howell had 21 digs and Julianna Carlson compiled 13 kills, seven digs and three blocks.
Panther Valley 3, Lehighton 0 — Jaelynn Browdy notched 10 kills and had two aces as the Panthers completed a Saturday doubleheader sweep with a 25-8, 25-12, 25-16 non-league victory over the Indians (11-8).
Natalie Vermillion collected five kills, three aces and seven digs for Panther Valley (14-2), while Emma Dacey had four kills and eight digs.
Marian 3, Hazleton Area 2 — At Hometown, Eris Hayes tallied 34 assists, five kills, two aces and 16 digs as the Fillies outlasted the Cougars 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 15-25, 17-15 in a non-league match.
Alena Lombardo notched 11 kills and had five blocks for Marian (14-3), while Isabella Horvat added eight kills, three aces and 19 digs and Caydense Smith compiled 30 digs and four assists.
Marian won JV 2-0.
North Schuylkill 3, Shenandoah Valley 0 — Brigid Flynn compiled seven kills and Kyla Carado collected six aces and eight kills to lead the Spartans to a 25-12, 25-16, 25-13 non-league win over the Blue Devils.
Lauren Powis added four aces, four kills and four digs for North Schuylkill (4-10). Angelique Zamudio had 15 digs, Aubrie Monaghan had eight digs and Katrina McNulty tallied two aces and three digs for Shenandoah Valley (1-15).
North Schuylkill won JV 2-0.
Salem Christian 3, Weatherly 0 — Rachel Rosenlund had four service points, three aces, two kills and 13 assists in the Wreckers’ 25-11, 25-19, 25-16 non-league loss to Salem Christian (11-7) in Weatherly.
Abby Binder added five service points and three kills for Weatherly (4-12), while Abby Theodore added three service points and four digs.
