Local Roundup: Pottsville girls’ soccer blanks Blue Devils

No local golfers advance at D-11 qualifier

EASTON — It was a tough day for Schuylkill League golfers trying to make the District 11 Golf Championships.

None of the four local competitors shot a score good enough to punch their ticket to next week’s district championships during Monday’s District 11 Qualifying Tournament at the Northampton Country Club.

Schuylkill Haven’s Eli Barton just missed earning a spot in the Class AA field, placing eighth with a 19-over-par 91. The top seven golfers qualified for districts. Nativity’s Trey Keating also competed in the boys’ Class AA event, finishing tied for 12th with a 99.

On the girls’ side, North Schuylkill’s Mya Conti carded a 120 and Minersville’s Lexi Sukeena tallied a 148. Girls’ golfers needed to shoot 110 or below to qualify.

The District 11 Golf Championships will be held Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Steel Club in Bethlehem with an 8:30 a.m. start.

In the district team tournaments, Schuylkill League champion Blue Mountain is part of the four-team Class 3A field along with East Penn Conference champion Nazareth, Colonial League winner Southern Lehigh and Northampton. Schuylkill Haven and Nativity qualified in Class AA, along with Moravian Academy and Notre Dame-Green Pond.

Individually, the league will send six boys and three girls to districts. On the boys’ side, Schuylkill League champion Alan Evans and Talan Spittler of Schuylkill Haven and North Schuylkill’s Jude Maziekas will compete in the boys’ AA tourney, while Blue Mountain’s Dylan Knittle and Gabe Kamarousky and Pottsville’s Maxum DiRenzo are in the Class 3A boys’ tournament.

On the girls’ side, Schuylkill League champion Delaney Walborn of Blue Mountain, Minersville’s Emma Troutman and Nativity’s Carleigh Palmieri earned spots.

Girls’ Soccer

Pottsville 13, Shenandoah Valley 0 — Kailey Olenick scored three goals and Aubrey Snyder tallied two as the Crimson Tide rolled past the Blue Devils in a Schuylkill League Division I girls’ game at Alumni Field.

Abbie Davis added a goal and four assists for Pottsville (8-3-1, 7-1), while Trinity Mendofik, Cami Quirin-Morris, Lauren Kelly, Brooke Palko, Hadley Snyder, Lauren Goodman and Emma Adams also scored. Hadley Snyder had two assists.

Pottsville outshot Shenandoah Valley 20-0. Sami Cortes had seven saves for the Blue Devils.

Lehighton 7, Minersville 1 — Sadie Monk had four goals and one assist to lead Lehighton to a non-league victory over visiting Minersville.

Mylee Lutsko and Taylor Moyer added one goal and one assist apiece for the Indians (5-8).

Jenna Cullen, assisted by Kloee Horoschak, scored for Minersville (6-5).

Cassidy Litts made five saves for Lehighton; Olivia Kopinetz made eight saves for the Miners.

There was no report from the Lourdes at Tri-Valley or Williams Valley at Schuylkill Haven girls’ soccer matches.

Boys’ Soccer

Schuylkill Haven 1, Lehighton 0 — At Lehighton, Carter Daniel’s first-half goal, assisted by Luke Smith, held up as Schuylkill Haven edged Lehighton in a non-league match.

Gavin Wade posted the shutout in goal for the Hurricanes (7-4). Bryce Miller stopped eight shots for the Indians (5-6).

Girls’ Volleyball

Mahanoy Area 3, Williams Valley 0 — At Tower City, Carly Honus had five digs, including the 500th of her career, as the Golden Bears swept the Vikings 25-7, 25-21, 25-9 in a non-league contest.

Honus also had three aces and three kills. Caylin Blashock tallied four aces and three kills for Mahanoy Area, while Lexi Chilinskas dished out 14 assists.

Emily Miller compiled two kills and nine digs for Williams Valley, while Roxanne Machamer and Gabrielle Duprez each had two kills and two digs. Mahanoy Area won JV 2-0.

Schuylkill Haven 3, Tamaqua 0 — Karlee Feger notched 12 kills, seven aces and two digs to pace the Hurricanes past the Blue Raiders 25-18, 25-18, 25-8 in a non-league match.

Jolynn Ross compiled 21 assists, two aces, six digs and two kills for Schuylkill Haven, while Teagan Wehr had 18 digs, four assists and two aces.

Millie Black led Tamaqua with four blocks and three kills, while Kendel Miller had three blocks and Madison Schock dished out five assists and had four digs.

Schuylkill Haven won JV 2-1.

Minersville 3, Central Columbia 0 — Lydia Harris collected eight kills and four digs as the Miners downed the Blue Jays 25-15, 25-14, 25-22 in a non-league encounter.

Ayla Castle compiled 20 assists, four digs and four aces for the Miners, while Hailey Croley added four aces, six kills and nine digs. Minersville won JV 2-0.

Pine Grove 3, Northern Lebanon 1 — At Pine Grove, Domani Collazo had 23 kills, six digs and four blocks to lead Pine Grove to a 25-20, 26-24, 21-25, 25-15 win over Northern Lebanon in a non-league match.

Also for the Cardinals (8-4), Madison Shiffer compiled six kills, four aces and one block, while Mary Fertig contributed four aces and 39 assists.

For Northern Lebanon, Claire Borcky had six kills; Daisha Celleri made three blocks; and Shea Moyer hit five aces.

Pine Grove won JV 2-1.

The following local sporting events were postponed due to Monday’s rainy weather:

*North Schuylkill at Tamaqua girls’ soccer — Saturday, Oct. 5, 1:30 p.m.

*Tamaqua at Crestwood girls’ tennis — Wednesday, Sept. 25, 4 p.m.

*Blue Mountain at Pottsville girls’ tennis — ppd. Thursday, Sept. 26, 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s Freeland MMI at Tamaqua girls’ tennis match was postponed to Thursday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m.
