Tide edge Panthers in volleyball thriller

It took some extra volleyball to separate two of the top Schuylkill League Division I teams Tuesday night at Martz Hall.

Megan Yost had a big night with a whopping 50 assists, 21 digs and four kills as Pottsville pulled out a 18-25, 25-16, 14-25, 25-17, 19-17 victory over Panther Valley in a clash of Division I titans.

The victory keeps Pottsville (7-0 D-I) as the lone unbeaten team in Division I and gives the Tide a two-game lead over Panther Valley (5-2), Blue Mountain (5-2) and Mahanoy Area (5-2). Anna Burke had 16 kills and four blocks for the Tide, while Lainey Dusel had 10 kills, 30 digs and two blocks.

Natalie Vermillion collected 19 kills, four aces and 22 digs for Panther Valley, while Emma Dacey had nine kills and 10 digs, Abby Benack tallied 19 assists and 10 digs and Caroline Breslin compiled 28 digs.

Pottsville won JV 2-0.

Blue Mountain 3, North Schuylkill 0 — At Orwigsburg, Alexa Marshall notched 10 kills and had four digs as the Eagles swept the Spartans 25-15, 25-18, 25-13 in a Division I match.

Jaedyn Bartholomew tallied six kills, 10 aces and six digs for Blue Mountain (5-2 D-I), while Isabella Grasso had 20 assists.

North Schuylkill dropped to 1-5 in league play. Blue Mountain won JV 2-0.

Pine Grove 3, Lourdes 0 — In Shamokin, Ashley Bonowitz recorded seven kills and Domani Collazo had 13 kills and three blocks as the Cardinals cruised past the Red Raiders 25-10, 25-16, 25-17.

Payton Harris added 22 assists and six aces for Pine Grove (3-4 D-I). Anna Keer had 10 kills, 15 digs and three aces for Lourdes (1-5 D-I), while Ella Kerris had three aces, five kills and two digs and Anna Krebs contributed 16 assists and five digs.

Pine Grove won JV 2-0.

Mahanoy Area 3, Tamaqua 0 — At Tamaqua, the Golden Bears (5-2 D-I) captured the Division I victory with a 25-24, 25-12, 25-15 sweep.

Leah Black had eight digs, Isadora Neifert had five digs and two kills and Leah Crowley had four digs for Tamaqua (0-7 D-I). Mahanoy Area won JV 2-0.

Nativity 3, Williams Valley 0 — In Tower City, Sara Spolski notched a double-double with 11 kills and 11 assists as the Green Wave downed the Vikings 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 in a Division II match.

Julianna Carlson notched 17 kills, eight digs and four assists for Nativity (6-1 D-II), while Ella Putalavage had eight digs and four assists.

Naomi Carl had two kills, four aces and five digs to pace Williams Valley (2-5 D-II). Audrina Fry had three kills, Gabrielle Duprez had two kills and five digs and Emily Miller collected 10 digs for the Vikings. Nativity won JV 2-0.

Schuylkill Haven 3, Shenandoah Valley 0 — Karlee Feger collected 14 kills and nine aces as the host Hurricanes beat the visiting Blue Devils 25-8, 25-16, 25-12 in a Division II match.

Jolynn Ross dished out 19 assists and had two aces, two kills and six digs for Schuylkill Haven (4-3 D-II), while Teagan Wehr had six aces, nine digs and two assists.

Katrina McNulty had four service points, two aces and six digs for Shenandoah Valley (0-7 D-II), while Ava Antz had three service points, two blocks and two aces. Schuylkill Haven won JV 2-0.

Tri-Valley 3, Minersville 0 — At Minersville, Liv Lupole had eight kills and Faith Melocheck added five as the Dawgs swept the Miners 25-21, 25-7, 25-8 in a Division II contest.

Callie Melocheck directed the offense with 25 assists and six aces for Tri-Valley (6-1 D-II). Ayla Castle had 15 assists and 11 digs to lead Minersville (3-4 D-II), while Camryn Colna had three aces, four kills and four digs, and Hailey Croley had five kills and two digs.

Tri-Valley won JV 2-0.

Marian 3, Weatherly 0 — At Weatherly, Isabella Horvat had 13 aces, six kills and three digs as the Fillies rolled past the Wreckers 25-8, 25-6, 25-15.

Lara Cancio added eight kills and Eris Hayes dished out 22 assists for Marian (6-1 D-II). Kelly Reiner had two service points, three kills, six blocks and three digs, while Abby Binder had two service points and five blocks and Abby Weston tallied four digs for Weatherly (1-6 D-II).

Girls’ Soccer

Pine Grove 1, Pottsville 0 — Meadow Umbenhauer’s goal at the 35:55 mark was the game’s only tally as the Cardinals handed the Tide their first Schuylkill League defeat with a Division I win at Alumni Field.

Alyssa Moyer stopped all five Pottsville shots to record the shutout in net for Pine Grove (4-2 D-I). Aubrey Scanlan made four saves for the Tide (6-3-1, 5-1 D-I). Pottsville won the JV match 4-1.

Minersville 1, Williams Valley 0 — Emily Yoder found the back of the net off an assist by Sara McGrath 6:24 into the game and their defense made it stand up as the Miners blanked the Vikings in a Division II match in Minersville.

Olivia Kopinetz pitched the shutout for Minersville (3-2 D-II), making six saves. Sage Smeltz stopped three shots for Williams Valley (2-2 D-II).

Blue Mountain 9, Shenandoah Valley 0 — Lexi Waschko, Hailey Scheuer and Ellie Colindres each scored a pair of goals as the Eagles (5-1 D-I) rolled past the Blue Devils (0-5 D-I) in a Division I match at the Eagles’ Nest.

Ella Smith, Addie Warke and Riley Fogarty added goals for Blue Mountain, which led 8-0 at halftime. Scheuer and Warke each had two assists.

Tamaqua 8, Marian 0 — At Hometown, Sienna Stellfox tallied three goals and an assist as the Blue Raiders cruised past the Fillies (0-5 D-I) in a Division I contest.

Evelyn Leinbach added two goals and two assists for Tamaqua (2-4 D-I), while Kimmy Rudy had two goals and Angelina Reichert also scored. Veronica Scott had three saves to record her second shutout in three days.

North Schuylkill 10, Jim Thorpe 0 — At Fountain Springs, Lilah Helwig collected three goals and three assists as the Spartans downed the Olympians in a non-league contest.

Taylor Shadle and Addie Urban each added a goal and an assist for North Schuylkill (7-2 overall), while Samantha Staconis, Cecelia Rau, Jillian Murray, Mylee Bindie and Marlie White scored one goal apiece.

Maddie Moyer earned the shutout in net as the Spartans limited Jim Thorpe (1-7 overall) to just one shot on goal.
