Pottsville grad Travis Blankenhorn has elected free agency, according to multiple sources.
The 28-year-old was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals last week after being with the club since the beginning of September and then cleared waivers. Washington took him off its 40-man roster when the Nats claimed reliever Michael Rucker from Philadelphia.
Since he has played in the major leagues in five seasons and been outrighted multiple times in his career, he has the right to refuse an outright assignment to the minor leagues and has thus elected free agency.
The lefty-hitting Blankenhorn hit .129 with one walk in 32 at-bats during his latest stint with the Nationals. He has a career .154/.230/.264 slash in 100 at-bats in the majors.
