TAMAQUA — Victor Schlosser scored two touchdowns to help Tamaqua rally past North Schuylkill 35-17 in a Schuylkill/Colonial Red Division game Friday night at Tamaqua Area Sports Stadium.

The Blue Raiders started strong, getting a first-quarter touchdown from Tyler Koch. Nick Barron’s extra point was missed, but Tamaqua had a 6-0 lead.

The Spartans recovered quickly to take the lead 7-6 going into the second quarter. A touchdown pass from Caden Mengel to Kevin Jones and Gavin Mentzer’s extra point helped the Spartans take the lead.

A Luke Miller interception set up North Schuylkill in the second quarter. The Spartans went to the ground game, with Mengel sneaking in for a TD and a 14-6 lead.

Tamaqua answered after the kickoff, keeping possession of the ball most of the rest of the half. With 22 seconds left in the first half, Schlosser scored a 23-yard touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion, the Blue Raiders made it an even playing field, leaving the score 14-14 at halftime.

The Blue Raiders started with possession in the third quarter and continued to stand confident in their rushing game. The ball was handed to Bradley Whalen, who rushed for 35 yards before Michael Mogish brought him down in Tamaqua territory.

Tamaqua quarterback Luke Kane completed a pass to Schlosser for a first down. Once again, the ball was handed to Whalen who scored for the Blue Raiders. Barron’s extra point gave Tamaqua a 21-14 lead.

The Spartans got a short field goal from Mentzer, cutting the deficit to 21-17.

In the fourth quarter, Tamaqua put the game away. Whalen, Kane and Schlosser all had the chance to rush prior to Schlosser’s second touchdown. Schlosser rushed for 13 yards to the end zone, and Barron’s extra point was good, setting the final.

“We knew (the Spartans) were going to be bigger, so we decided to lean on speed,” Schlosser said. “Get them tired. With North Schuylkill’s reputation, this was an awesome win for us.”

In Week 3, the Blue Raiders will play at Pottsville, while the Spartans are back in action at home to face Notre Dame-Green Pond.
