County Senior Golf: Muncy, Coulson capture crowns

Mike Muncy putts on No. 18 during Monday's final round of the Schuylkill County Amateur Golf Senior Division Championships at the Schuylkill Country Club, Orwigsburg.

ORWIGSBURG — Mike Muncy needs surgery to repair a rotator cuff injury in his left shoulder. He’s glad the surgery isn’t until October.

The 66-year-old Pottsville resident carded a 3-under-par 72-69—141 to capture the Super-Senior Division title at Monday’s 20th annual Schuylkill County Amateur Golf Senior Division Championships at the Schuylkill Country Club.

Muncy said the injury actually helped his swing. The results showed as he was the only player in the 27-golfer, two-day, 36-hole tournament to shoot a round under par and post a total under par.

Joe Coulson won the championship of the Senior Division by shooting a final-round 72 Monday at Schuylkill Country Club.

Joe Coulson won the Senior Division championship for the second straight year, rallying from four strokes back entering Monday to win by three strokes over first-round leader Joe Orsulak.

It’s the second year the county senior championships were split into the Senior Division (ages 55-64) and Super-Senior Division (ages 65 and over).

“I’m headed for rotator cuff surgery and my swing … I stayed more connected,” Muncy said. “My swing stayed together more. My putting, I went back to something that worked a while ago. I made a lot of putts.

“My swing, even with this rotator cuff surgery, I’m actually swinging good. Maybe I should cancel it.”

It’s Muncy’s first county senior tournament title. He won Schuylkill County Amateur Golf Medal-Play crowns in 1997 and 1999 and the county Match-Play championship in 1999.

Muncy shot an even-par 72 in Saturday’s opening round, building a five-stroke lead in the Championship Flight. Monday, his round included birdies on No. 3, No. 14, No. 15 and No. 17, 13 pars and only one bogey — on the par-3 No. 4.

His dominating round left him with an 11-stroke victory over 2022 overall champion Tim Wood, who finished with an 8-over 78-74—152. Mike Barnes (77-82—159) and Dave Kurzinsky (80-79—159) tied for third in the Super-Senior Championship Flight.

Larry Lucas won the Super-Senior 1st Flight crown with an 86-82—168, winning by six strokes over Jeff Schoener (89-85—174) and Larry Hart (87-87—174).

Larry Lucas, left, and Mike Muncy were the Super-Senior Division Flight winners at Monday’s Schuylkill County Amateur Golf Senior Division Championships at the Schuylkill Country Club.

“There’s still a lot of room for the old guys,” Muncy said. “I was signed up for the (Senior Division), but Tim (Wood) said I need to play with my age group. It was fun.

“Everything was working. My tee balls were OK and I didn’t get into too much trouble. I kept the ball in the small grass today. I haven’t played that well in a long time.”

Orsulak led the Senior Division by four strokes after shooting a 1-over 73 on Saturday. His round Monday featured five bogeys, 12 pars and a double-bogey 5 on the par-3 No. 16, giving him a two-day total of 73-79—152.

Coulson, who had a 77 on Saturday, mixed four birdies (2, 4, 5, 8) and four bogeys (1, 3, 10, 18) with 10 pars to shoot an even-par 72 and finish at 77-72—149.

Michael Wells (80-75—155) and Bruce Lord (78-77—155) tied for third in the 11-golfer Senior Division.

“I didn’t play well Saturday. That’s generally not the way I play, but you get those rounds,” said Coulson, a former Pottsville resident who lives in Coopersburg. “You want to redeem yourself and play a little better. I played better today.

“Joe (Orsulak) played really well, he just had one bad hole that really hurt him. I played good enough to sneak by with the win.”

Tim Wood, front, putts on No. 18 while Mike Barnes looks on during Monday’s final round of the Schuylkill County Amateur Golf Senior Division Championships at Schuylkill Country Club.

Coulson came within two feet of the cup with his drive on the par-3 No. 4, but said saving bogey on the par-5 No. 3 was critical after his drive went out of bounds.

“(On 4) The front flag is easier,” Coulson said. “I hit it up high on the green a little, it sucked back … it was a nice shot that rolled back to about two feet. It was an easy birdie putt.

“I hit my drive out of bounds on No. 3. Just making birdie there, after hitting my drive out of bounds, was just ridiculous. Then the birdie on No. 5 helped.

“My goal today was to try to catch Joe on the front nine and put a little pressure on him,” Coulson continued. “The main thing is to put pressure on the guy leading. I think we were tied after nine, then it was just a matter of not playing dumb and seeing how the rest of the round went.”
