Weekend Track Roundup: Tide girls, Nativity boys tops at Tamaqua; Eagles break 3 marks at Ship

TAMAQUA — Noah Dolbin and Michael Stank have been fixtures on the Schuylkill League boys’ track and field scene for several seasons.

Monday, the two Nativity seniors proved they’re ready for more postseason success.

Dolbin and Stank each had a hand in four victories as the Green Wave rolled to the boys’ team title at the nine-team Tamaqua Invitational at the Tamaqua All Sports Stadium.

Dolbin swept the hurdles, won the long jump and ran a leg on Nativity’s winning 1600-meter relay team. Stank won the 200 and 400 meters and competed on two winning relays as the Green Wave compiled 173 points, 32 more than second-place Tamaqua.

Nolan Daynorowicz (800), Liam Messina (high jump) and Aiden Becker (javelin) added individual wins for Nativity, which captured 10 of the 18 events.

Other boys’ winners included Pottsville’s Evan Galavage (100), Ryan Galen (discus) and Killian Bressler (pole vault), Tamaqua’s Aidan Elston (1600) and Terrence McDowell (triple jump), Mahanoy Area’s William Mayberry (3200), Schuylkill Haven’s Ethan Kline (shot put) and Pottsville’s 400 relay team.

On the girls’ side, Alexa Giuffre won twice and Rhyan Brennan and Ashley Gould added victories as Pottsville took home an invitational team title for the second time in five days.

Giuffre took first in the 100 hurdles and long jump, while Brennan won the triple jump and Gould captured the shot put. Pottsville also won the 1,600 relay. The Tide captured the girls’ team title at Thursday’s Pine Grove Invitational.

Nativity’s Sara Spolski won three events, taking the 100, 200 and 400, while Tamaqua’s Samantha Plasha (high jump, pole vault) was a double winner.

Other winners included Tamaqua’s Madelyn Schaefer (800), Mahanoy Area’s Caylin Blashock (1600) and Felicia Bro (3200), Schuylkill Haven’s Isabella Hughes (300 hurdles) and Karlee Feger (discus), Kutztown’s Emma Repsher (javelin), the Marian 400 relay and the Tamaqua 3200 relay.

Local athletes excel at Roddick Invitational

SHIPPENSBURG — Chase Guers broke a pair of Blue Mountain school records and ran a leg on a third en route to four top-six finishes at Saturday’s 98th Roddick High School Invitational at Shippensburg University.

Guers was fifth in the 100 meters in 10.58 and sixth in the 200 in 21.78, with both times breaking school records. The 100-meter school record had stood since Steve Cryts set it in 1986. Guers also ran a leg on the Eagles’ 400 relay team, combining with Kole Luckenbill, Gaige Guers and Cole Swick to take third in 41.82.

Blue Mountain’s 1600 relay broke a school record that stood since 2013, as Rafael Liranzo, Swick, Gaige Guers and Francesco Carr placed fourth in a school-record time of 3:24.81.

On the girls’ side, Pottsville’s Alexa Giuffre and Blue Mountain’s Makayla Keck each had big days, both bringing home silver medals.

Giuffre was second in the long jump, sixth in the 300 hurdles and ninth in the 100 hurdles. Keck was second in the javelin, while Pottsville’s Ashley Gould took sixth in the shot put.

Local athletes from Blue Mountain, Minersville, Pottsville and Schuylkill Haven competed in the invitational, which featured athletes from 111 high schools.
