HS Baseball Roundup: Tamaqua edges Pottsville; North Schuylkill downs Tri-Valley

POTTSVILLE — Mason Ligenza and the Tamaqua baseball team pulled out another close win.

Ligenza, a senior, combined with fellow senior Noah Mateyak to hold Pottsville to one run on six hits as the Blue Raiders edged the Crimson Tide 3-1 in a Schuylkill League Division I game Thursday at Jim Steidle Field at the CACL Complex. The duo also combined for 12 strikeouts.

Jake Yenser put Tamaqua on the board in the third with an RBI single that ended a scoreless start for both teams.

Tamaqua (11-1, 5-1 D-I) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Ligenza launched a solo home run to near-dead center. Pottsville (2-10, 1-5) answered in the bottom half, cutting the deficit to one as Max Clews grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Andrew Allen.

In the sixth, Ligenza worked a six-pitch, bases-loaded walk to drive in an insurance run and make it 3-1.

Mateyak took over on the mound to start the fourth and struck out eight, allowing one run on three hits in relief.

For Pottsville, Dominic Rynard pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out nine. Landon Trout added three strikeouts in relief.

North Schuylkill 8, Tri-Valley 2

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Kevin Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs as North Schuylkill defeated Tri-Valley in a Division I game.

The Spartans (4-5, 2-4) tacked on seven runs in the final two innings of the game to roll to the victory. Kolton Joyce added two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Chase Slotcavage pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

For the Dawgs (10-2, 5-2), Owen Miller and Gavin Scheib each had an RBI.

Schuylkill Haven 9, Nativity 5

POTTSVILLE — Chase Yoder had two big hits that resulted in four RBIs as Schuylkill Haven beat Nativity in a Division II game.

Yoder ripped a single in the top of the third inning that plated a pair and gave the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead. Later he roped a two-run double in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2. Alan Evans pitched six innings for Schuylkill Haven and fanned eight.

For the Hilltoppers, Ryan Grabowski, Ryan Examitis, Tommy Bartashus and Zeno Rugh each had an RBI.

Williams Valley 14, Marian 11

HOMETOWN — Cody Boehmer and Nic Martin each collected three RBIs as Williams Valley edged Marian in a Division II slugfest.

Fletcher Thompson chipped in three hits and a pair of RBIs for the Vikings, who used a six-run, second-inning outburst to take control.

For the Colts, Jimmy Cannon and Alex Diaz each totaled two RBIs in three plate appearances.

MAHANOY CITY — Logan Hutsko exploded for a single, two doubles and four total RBIs as Minersville cruised past Mahanoy Area in a Division II ballgame.

Easton Schultz, Nolan Plesnarski, Nate Halupa, Colby Leshko and Justin Cutler added an RBI for the Battlin’ Miners.

For the Golden Bears, Donovan Herman, Levi Terry and Derek Alvarado each knocked in an RBI.

SHENANDOAH — Brayden Maksimik, Johnny Burke, Ethan Bench and Brandon Boris each collected two RBIs as Shenandoah Valley rolled past Weatherly in a Division II game.

Maksimik, along with Landon Monaghan, went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Blue Devils (8-4, 5-2).

Bradlee Connors, Kolton Reiner and Niko Suarez each had a hit for the Wreckers (2-10, 0-7).

Pine Grove 6, Schuylkill Valley 3

LEESPORT — Quinn Brommer went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as Pine Grove defeated Schuylkill Valley in a non-league game.

Wyatt Snyder and Brayden Lyons each tacked on an RBI for the Cardinals (6-6), while Brommer threw six innings and struck out nine batters.
