HS Baseball Roundup: Dawgs, Hilltoppers, Blue Raiders win in tightly contested matchups

TAMAQUA — Luke Kane came through at the perfect time for Tamaqua.

Kane, a senior, singled and pushed across a crucial RBI late in the ballgame as Tamaqua edged Panther Valley 3-2 in a Schuylkill League Division I matchup Tuesday.

Ace Schickram came into the game to pinch run for Maximus Navarro, who singled to start the bottom of the fifth inning for the Blue Raiders (10-1, 4-1 D-I). Kane hit a clutch, 2-out single to left field that scored Schickram from third and broke a 2-2 tie on the scoreboard.

Flashback to the bottom of the first inning, where Cooper Ansbach reached on an error that also resulted in Jake Yenser scoring the first run of the contest for Tamaqua.

Ansbach and Yenser also managed the pitching duties for the Raiders. Ansbach started and three four innings, walked three, allowed two hits and struck out five. Yenser relived Ansbach in the bottom of the fifth and tallied a trio of strikeouts.

Mason Ligenza hit a double and came around to score on a single by Yenser in the bottom of the third inning to push Tamaqua’s lead to 2-0.

The Panthers (3-5, 1-4) were able to capitalize on mistakes and tie the game 2-2 thanks to a based loaded walk drew by Logan Fisher followed by a sacrifice fly from Brady Jones.

Cam Caffery pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) for Panther Valley.

Tri-Valley 7, Pottsville 6, 8 inn.

HEGINS — Braedan Doyle hit a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Tri-Valley outlasted Pottsville in a Division I game.

The Crimson Tide (2-9, 1-4 D-I) evened the score 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning following an error by the Dawgs (10-1, 5-1). In the top of the eighth, Dominic Rynard hit an RBI double to give Pottsville a brief 6-5 lead.

Owen Miller legged a bunt for Tri-Valley and an errant throw saw Gavin Scheib score to tie the game 6-6. After an intentional walk to Jason Stewart, Doyle skied the fourth pitch of his eighth inning at-bat into center field for his third hit of the contest.

Nativity 6, Williams Valley 4

POTTSVILLE — Nick Wagner went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and tallied two RBIs as Nativity held on to defeat Williams Valley in a Division II game.

The Hilltoppers committed three errors in the top of the seventh and the Vikings plated four runs.

Andrew Verichick, Barry Jenkins, Zeno Rugh and Tommy Bartashus each added an RBI for Nativity.

Marian 13, Minersville 5

HOMETOWN — Rocco Griguoli went 4-f0r-4 with four RBIs as Marian rolled past Minersville in a Division II contest.

The Colts collected eight runs in the first inning and didn’t look back. Chase Grier and Jimmy Cannon each tallied a pair of RBIs for Marian (5-6, 4-2 D-II).

For the Battlin’ Miners (6-6, 4-3), Easton Schultz had three hits and Owen Fortna added two hits and a pair of RBIs.

MAHANOY CITY — Mikey Oblas totaled four RBIs as Mahanoy cruised past Weatherly in a Division II game.

Oblas had a double and also scored a run, while Brady Noraka pitched five innings and allowed three hits.

For the Wreckers, Raymond Montz collected an RBI.
