MAHANOY CITY — North Schuylkill continues to club the ball.

For the fourth straight game, the Spartans compiled double-digit runs and double-digit hits.

All of that offense overwhelmed Mahanoy Area 23-2 in five innings Tuesday in the Schuylkill League Division I opener for both teams on a blustery afternoon in Mahanoy City.

North Schuylkill scored eight runs in the top of the first inning to take command.

In their four games, the Spartans (3-1, 1-0 D-I) have scored 63 runs, an average of 15.8 per game. They’ve also smacked 58 hits, an average of 14.5 per game.

“We talk about about hitting and it’s one of the things we work on at all of our practices,” North Schuylkill coach Jack Flynn said. “We’re a pretty good hitting team right now, so it’s key.”

In that big opening outburst, Jordanna Frie roped a two-run double; Lindsay Brouse singled home a run; Olivia Jones clubbed a two-run double; and Maria Monahan laced an RBI triple. Frie finished the day with three runs scored and three RBIs; Jones went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs; and Monahan went 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.

That’s not all. At the top of the lineup, Monica Selgrade went 1-for-1 with two runs and three RBIs, while No. 2 batter Lyza Holmes finished 2-for-3 with a two-run triple in the second inning and a two-run double in the third. Every North Schuylkill starter either scored a run or drove in a run.

Trailing 8-0, Mahanoy Area (2-1, 0-1) got two runs back in the bottom of the first inning. Ella Brode reached on an error, moved to third on Cadance Poslosky’s double and scored on a passed ball. Naomi Kowalick followed with another double to drive in Poslosky.

That’s all winning pitcher Brigid Flynn allowed. She finished the day with a five-hitter and surrendered just one earned run. Flynn struck out six and walked none.

North Schuylkill returns to action Thursday when it hosts Blue Mountain a huge Schuylkill League Division I game. Mahanoy Area hosts Panther Valley on Thursday.
