HS Softball: Tamaqua slugs way past Marian

HOMETOWN — It’s no secret that Tamaqua struggled at the plate last season.

So the Blue Raiders went to work during the offseason and preseason, trying to turn a weakness into a strength.

If Tuesday’s season opener against Marian is any indication, Tamaqua will be a lot more dangerous swinging the bats this spring.

The Blue Raiders banged out 13 hits and scored in five innings to outlast the Fillies 9-4 in a non-league softball game on the Marian campus.

“I was real pleased with the hitting today,” Tamaqua coach Tony Zancofsky said. “We’ve been working very hard on our hitting this year. … As we came into the beginning of the season, that was our goal, to do a lot of hitting and not look at pitches for strikeouts. … If we continue to hit, we should be in a lot of games this year.”

After taking 1-0 lead on Addison Krall’s RBI groundout in the first inning, Tamaqua (1-0) bunched five hits and two errors to bat around in the third inning, scoring five more runs for a 6-0 lead. Marian (1-1) made two errors that would have ended the inning, and Tamaqua made the Fillies pay. Ceanna Gormley roped a two-run double, and Megan Linkhorst followed with an RBI double to break the game open.

Nine different girls had at least one hit for Tamaqua, with Kolbe Robb going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run scored and one RBI. Leah Crowley added a single, a triple and an RBI, and Nico Conahan contributed a single, two runs scored and an RBI.

Freshman pitchers Peyton Faust and Noami Knitter combined on a five-hitter. Faust went the first 4.1 innings to pick up the win. She allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out seven. Knitter gave up one run and two hits in 2.2 innings of relief.

“They came and jumped into a role that’s tough to do in high school softball,” Zancofsky said of his freshman hurlers. “The seniors took them under their wings, and the seniors are excited about the pitching. It’s going to be a rotation between the two of them, and that’s how we’re going to go.”

Marian tried to rally, but the deficit proved too large. Gracie Sendatch hit a two-run single in the fifth inning and scored on a passed ball to cut Tamaqua’s lead to 7-3. DeAnna Pugh added an RBI single in the seventh.

“They didn’t hang their heads,” Marian coach Lyndsey Reinoehl said. “Not at all. … They kept fighting the whole time, talking to each other, cheering each other on.”
