PIAA Girls’ Basketball: Vikings, Fillies face playoff regulars in state quarterfinals

The Williams Valley and Marian girls hit the road tonight for the PIAA Class AA state quarterfinals with the hope of meeting each other in the state semifinals Friday, March 21.
The Vikings trek to Lake Lehman High School to take on District 2 champion Mountain View at 6 p.m. The game can be heard live on T-102 (101.9 FM). Marian, meanwhile, ventures to Adams County to take on District 5 champion Berlin Brothersvalley at 7 p.m. at Gettysburg High School.
The Schuylkill League’s third remaining team in the PIAA Tournament, Lourdes, plays Saturday against District 1 champion Delco Christian at noon at Hamburg High School.

Got revenge for two losses to Elk Lake with 34-17 victory in District 2 championship game. …. Competing in Class AA for first time this season after making long state playoff runs in Class A the past two seasons. In 2023, Mountain View went 21-7 and lost to Lourdes 34-33 in the state semifinals. Last season, Eagles went 24-5 and reached the PIAA Class A state championship game before losing to Bishop Guilfoyle 35-17.

Game Notes / Breakdown
Mountain View enters the game with a huge advantage in big-game experience, having made deep PIAA runs and played in a state final over the past two years. … Junior center Addison Kilmer is a star and can shoot from inside and out. She had a game-high 25 points and hit five 3-pointers in second-round win over Renaissance Academy. She’s scored just short of 500 points this season. Obviously, she will have to be the focal point of Williams Valley’s defense. …. Williams Valley’s game plan in win over Shalom Christian Academy was to play solid zone defense and hit outside shots. The only problem was those outside shots didn’t fall. Vikings will need to hit some of those outside shots tonight to be successful against the Eagles.

How they got here: District 5 champions ran past 6-3 Bellwood-Antis 70-38 and District 3 champion York Catholic 71-52 in opening two rounds.

Fun Facts: Located in Somerset County, Berlin is making its fourth straight PIAA playoff appearance and in PIAA quarterfinals for third straight year. Similar to Mountain View, Berlin is also moved up to Class AA for this season after back-to-back long state playoff runs in Class A. Last year, Berlin went 23-6 and lost 54-53 to District 6 runner-up Williamsburg. In 2023, Berlin compiled a 23-6 record and reached the state semifinals before falling 45-31 to District 7 and eventual state champion Union Area. Berlin was District 5 runner-up in 2022 and lost in second round. …. Berlin’s boys’ basketball team lost to Nativity 51-47 in overtime in 2021 PIAA Class A state championship game in Hershey.

Game Notes / Breakdown
Fillies will face their toughest defensive challenge of the season when they take on the explosive Mountaineers. Berlin averages 60.8 points per game and has scored in the 70s in both of its PIAA contest. A young, but playoff-tested squad, the Mountaineers like to get up and down the floor. …. Mountaineers have won 22 straight after early-season losses to PIAA qualifiers Shady Side Academy and Greensburg Central Catholic. …. Prosser is Berlin’s playmaker, having scored 34 points in win over York Catholic. Foor is the 3-point shooter, hitting four vs. the Irish, while Sechler and Ritchey are the defensive leaders and were a big reason Berlin contained York Catholic stars Mariah Shue and Jayden Brown. …. Marian advanced past Elk Lake by hitting six 3-pointers, with Pugh hitting four. Fillies will need a similar effort against the Mountaineers. Must be patient on offense to get good look, and play strong on the defensive end.
