Noah Powers’ last visit to the Ned Hampford Natatorium figures to be one for the record books.

The Schuylkill League Swimming Championships are slated for Saturday morning at the Pottsville pool, with the start time moved up to 9 a.m. due to the forecast of inclement weather later in the day.

Swimmers from all seven of the league’s dual-meet teams — Blue Mountain, Mahanoy Area, Marian, North Schuylkill, Pottsville, Schuylkill Haven and Tamaqua — will be in action, plus independent swimmers from Panther Valley. They will compete in the 11 normal dual-meet events, with league champion Blue Mountain and the area’s senior swimmers being honored during breaks.

Powers, a senior headed to the University of Virginia, is seeded first in the 50-yard freestyle (20.52) and 100 backstroke (51.86). Those times are faster than the league (20.84), meet (21.56) and pool (20.84) records in the 50 free and quicker than the league and meet marks (52.13) that Powers set in the 100 backstroke at last year’s league championships.

Powers will also set his sights on beating one of the few Blue Mountain school records he doesn’t have — Mark Boran’s area record of 51.57 in the 100 backstroke set in 2017 at the PIAA Swimming Championships.

Marian’s Michael Strucko (200 free, 100 fly) and Schuylkill Haven’s Ethan Miller (200 IM, 100 breast) also drew No. 1 seeds in two events, with Blue Mountain swimmers Aidan Varney (100 free) and Porter Sarnes (500 free) grabbing the others. The Eagles are the top seed in all three relays.

On the girls’ side, Blue Mountain’s Sage Kaplafka (50 free, 100 free) and Marian’s Lydia Strucko (200 IM, 100 back) are seeded first in two events. Other top seeds are Schuylkill Haven’s Hope Stauffer (200 free) and Nikki Domermuth (100 fly), Mahanoy Area’s Lillian Brown (500 free) and Tamaqua’s Savannah Wilson (100 breast). Blue Mountain is seeded first in all three relays.

Kaplafka (25.14) and Stauffer (25.54) are seeded 1-2 in the 50 freestyle, which should be one of the closest races of the day.
