TAMAQUA — After six lead changes and three ties, North Schuylkill finally was able to upend Tamaqua in a back-and-forth battle.

Mya Conti scored a game-high 16 points and Hannah Kane chipped in 12 as North Schuylkill defeated Tamaqua 44-39 in a Schuylkill League Division I girls’ basketball matchup Monday night at the Tamaqua Area Athletic Center.

The Spartans (17-4, 14-0 D-I) finish undefeated in the league and earn a bye into next week’s Schuylkill League semifinals. The Raiders (17-5, 9-5) advance to the Schuylkill League playoffs as well, thanks to Schuylkill Haven’s win over Pine Grove (see related story: https://www.t102sportsnow.com/2025/02/03/hs-girls-basketball-schaeffers-big-night-propels-haven-past-pine-grove/).

Tamaqua will take on Division II No. 2 seed Williams Valley in Saturday’s quarterfinals at Martz Hall at a time to be determined.

“It’s a grind. We’re at the end of the year, facing teams a second time around,” North Schuylkill coach Rich Wetzel said. “We grinded this one out.”

Tamaqua started out hot on a 6-0 run, but Conti scored a pair of buckets to keep North Schuylkill within reach after an 8-4 first quarter. Conti, Kane and Gianna Capone were the major contributors in the second, cutting the deficit to two (17-15) heading into halftime.

Kane was a game-changer, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the second half.

“Ultimately, it came down to holding #21 (Lauren Ligenza) and #4 (Millie Black) off the boards,” she said. “We needed to keep them out of the paint.”

Ligenza and Millie Black combined for 22 rebounds.

Monica Selgrade and Maria Monahan led North Schuylkill in steals on the night, most coming in the fourth quarter. Conti and Monahan went 8-for-10 from the free-throw line to seal the Spartans’ win.

Millie Black was the only Raider to reach double-digits, finishing the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kendle Miller added nine on three 3-pointers.

“We play Pittston on Wednesday, which is better than a practice, and then we’ll clean up our defense and solidify our offense,” Wetzel said. “We’ll take care of business like we always do.”
