ORWIGSBURG — Adam Klinger had quite a weekend.

The Pottsville junior diver broke the school record in the 11-dive competition Saturday in Allentown, then cruised to the boys’ championship at Sunday’s Schuylkill League Diving Invitational.

Blue Mountain’s Hailey Scheuer captured the girls’ championship Sunday with 344.80 points as 10 of the league’s divers gathered at the Glen Belmont Natatorium for the first-ever 11-dive event hosted by a Schuylkill League school.

Saturday, Klinger scored 444.15 points to place seventh in a field of 17 at the 2025 Flips of Fury at Parkland High School. His performance broke the previous school record of 416.00 set by Ryan Feeney at the 2004 Schuylkill League Diving Championships.

Bishop Shanahan’s Landyn Snook, last year’s PIAA Class AA state runner-up, took the overall boys’ title with 496.85. Tamaqua’s Vinny Valentine also competed at Parkland, taking 15th with 268.15 points.

“It was super exciting. Great competition, a lot of great divers, a lot of good people, too,” Klinger said of Saturday’s competition. “To hold the 11-dive record and the 6-dive record now, that means a lot to me. I’m proud of myself and I’m hoping I can make it better from there.”

The defending Schuylkill League champion and two-time state qualifier said he used the same routine Sunday, when he scored 400.70 points to easily outdistance teammate Spencer Prestileo (211.90).

Unlike Saturday, when Klinger said he nailed just about every dive, Klinger had one hiccup Sunday when he failed to meet the criteria of his third dive and scored just 11.25 points.

Klinger handled the adversity well, averaging 40.45 points over his final eight dives, with five dives scoring 41.0 or higher. He scored a meet-high 49.20 on his ninth dive, a forward, 2.5 somersault from the tuck position.

“At first I was not happy at all,” Klinger said. “I used to have really bad mental states when I would do one bad dive. I’ve gotten over that. Now it’s just whatever happens happens. You can bounce back from that. That’s what I did.”

While Klinger was the easy favorite in the two-diver boys’ competition, the girls’ competition was a preview of the Schuylkill League Diving Championships slated for Feb. 7 at North Schuylkill’s Don Bricker Natatorium.

North Schuylkill’s Joyce Burian was the early leader, posting the highest score in each of the first three rounds. A Tri-Valley student who competes for the Spartans, Burian scored 28.05, 29.70 and 28.80 on her first three dives to take an 86.55-80.05 lead over Scheuer through three rounds.

Scheuer, the defending Schuylkill League and District 11 Class AA champion, said she builds her routine with a couple of “warm-up dives,” saving her toughest dives with higher difficulty for the later rounds.

“Usually I save my high difficulty for the end,” Scheuer said. “It’s good to warm up, do some easier dives before doing harder dives. I’ll do my 1.5 twist, then I’ll do my 2.5 twist, just to warm it up.”

Scheuer grabbed the overall lead in Round 4 by scoring 30.60 on a reverse dive, then posted the highest score in six of the final seven rounds.

The sophomore had the highest girls’ individual dive score of the day by compiling 40.70 points on a forward two somersault from the tuck position in Round 8. Her final five dives had difficulties of 2.3, 2.2, 1.7, 2.3 and 2.7.

“I’ve been doing that dive all season and it’s just been getting better and better,” Scheuer said of her eighth dive. “I just up and tuck, stand it up. That’s one of my highest scoring dives and I’m glad I put that where I did.”

Burian took second with 310.60, while Blue Mountain’s Shyanna White was third at 289.30. The top three were followed by Blue Mountain’s Kamryn Moran (250.60), Schuylkill Haven’s Taylor Fitzpatrick (247.00), Blue Mountain’s Ana Oettl (231.40), Blue Mountain’s Molly Stone (218.15) and Pottsville’s Lila Evans (165.95).

The Schuylkill League Diving Invitational, also affectionately called the Frozen Flip Fest, was created after the PIAA and District 11 changed the qualifying rules for districts. In years past, Schuylkill League divers could qualify for districts based on a regular-season six-dive score.

Now, divers must meet an 11-dive minimum of 240 points to qualify for districts. Before Sunday, the only 11-dive meet most of the Schuylkill League’s divers attended was the Schuylkill League Diving Championships.

Thanks to Sunday’s competition, Klinger and the top five girls’ finishers all qualified for districts.

“It is great to have this opportunity before leagues,” Scheuer said. “I like how it’s all Schuylkill League divers here. It’s very nice. They’re all so nice. It’s amazing to be able to qualify for districts, in case something happens at leagues. It’s very important to have this meet.”

Added Klinger: “This is really, really helpful since you have to compete in one to qualify for districts. It helps you get the feeling of an 11-dive meet, what your score would be like and helps you prepare for districts.”
