Weekend Roundup: Miners girls give Mealey 1st coaching victory

MINERSVILLE — It wasn’t easy, but Emily Mealey has her first victory as the head coach of the Minersville girls’ basketball team.

Jenna Cullen scored 13 points and Kloee Horoschak added 10 as the Miners topped Shenandoah Valley 41-40 in a non-league girls’ basketball game Saturday afternoon. Minersville had opened the season with 12 straight losses.

Cullen and Horoschak each had six points in a 16-6 third quarter that gave Minersville a 39-26 lead entering the fourth.

Shenandoah Valley, which has lost four straight and eight of nine, rallied in the fourth behind all 12 of Morgan Labosky’s points to make things interesting late. Horoschak had Minersville’s only bucket of the frame, while the Miners were 0-for-4 from the foul line.

Gianna Donovan led the Devils with 15, while Aubrie Monaghan hit three 3-pointers and had 11 points.

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — The Spartans took the state-ranked Lancers to the limit, seeing their five-game win streak come to an end with a non-league loss at the Cesari-Hope Gymnasium.

Mya Conti scored a game-high 18 points for North Schuylkill, which led 11-8 after one frame. Loyalsock took control in the third quarter to grab the victory.

HAMBURG — Alya Schneck-Haines led a balanced attack with 13 points as the Cardinals downed the Hawks in a non-league game.

Schneck-Haines had three of Pine Grove’s six 3-pointers, scoring 11 points in the first half as the Cardinals opened up a 27-16 lead at intermission. Hollyn Sampson added nine points and Hannah Leininger tallied eight for the Cards.

LEHIGHTON — Freshman Millie Black had another strong game for the Blue Raiders, scoring a game-high 16 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to lead Tamaqua past Lehighton in a non-league game.

Lauren Ligenza added 10 points and Kolbe Robb had eight steals for the Blue Raiders, who used a 17-8, third-quarter run to break the game open.

PALMYRA — Ryder Bowers drained four 3-pointers and had a team-high 19 points as the Crimson Tide earned a tough non-league win at Palmyra.

Bowers had nine points in the second quarter to help Pottsville build a 31-27 halftime lead. The Tide then iced it at the foul line, hitting 17-of-21 that included a 10-for-10 effort in the fourth quarter.

JuJu Bainbridge added a season-high 14 points for Pottsville, which won for the fourth straight game and sixth time in the last seven.

MINERSVILLE — Shazier Bethea followed up Friday’s monster performance with another one Saturday, hitting six 3-pointers and scoring 20 points as the Miners rolled past the Hurricanes in a non-league game.

Dante Carr scored a game-high 23 for Minersville, which won its ninth straight.

Alan Evans scored 15 points and Max Heim added 11 for Schuylkill Haven, which has lost nine of its last 10.

Joe Roth scored 29 points and Cole Dietz had 16 for Lehighton, which dominated the first half and took a 38-19 lead at intermission.

TAMAQUA — Savannah Wilson (500 free, 100 breast) won two individual events and swam on a winning relay as the Blue Raiders used their depth to down the Fillies in a Schuylkill League dual meet.

Ava Jones added a win in the 50 freestyle for Tamaqua (11-2, 8-1), which only won five of the 11 contested events.

Lydia Strucko broke the Tamaqua pool record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.06 and won the 200 IM for Marian (1-8, 1-8). Zoe Katona (200 free, 100 free) and Delaney Erickson (100 back) added wins for the Fillies.

TAMAQUA — Michael Strucko (200 free, 100 fly) and Andrew Metters (50 free, 100 free) each won two events and swam on two winning relays as the Colts and Blue Raiders battled to a tie in a Schuylkill League dual meet.

Marian (3-5-1, 3-5-1) won seven of the contested 10 events, with Reece Steibler also placing first in the 100 backstroke.

Vinny Valentine (200 IM), Brandon Temerantz (500 free) and Nicholas Barron (100 breast) won events for Tamaqua (3-8-2, 2-4-2), which tied for the second time this season.

Diving invitational postponed

Sunday’s scheduled Frozen Flip Fest, an 11-dive Schuylkill League diving invitational, was postponed due to Sunday’s forecasted snow. The event has been rescheduled for Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at Blue Mountain’s Glen Belmont Natatorium.
