HS Swimming: Powers breaks pair of NS pool records as Eagles top Spartans

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Noah Powers continues to break records at every pool he competes at.

The Blue Mountain senior set new Donald Bricker Natatorium records in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke in the Eagles’ 115-50 victory over North Schuylkill in a Schuylkill League boys’ swimming dual meet Tuesday.

In the 50 free, Powers broke his own pool record of 21.48 by going 21.44. In the 100 back, Powers broke Reggie Crawford’s pool record of 54.57 by going 51.91.

In addition, Blue Mountain’s Porter Sarnes (200 IM, 500 free) won a pair of individual events and was on two winning relays as the Eagles (9-1, 8-0 SL) won all 11 contested events against the Spartans (5-4, 4-4 SL).

Liam Magdeburg (200 free), Brody Moyer (100 fly), Gabe Kamarousky (100 free) and Zach Scala (100 breast) each picked up an individual event win as well.

Tamaqua 93, Schuylkill Haven 39

TAMAQUA — After tying the last time it competed against Schuylkill Haven, Tamaqua did not let that happen again. The Blue Raiders (3-7-1, 3-3-1) won nine out of 12 events as they defeated the Hurricanes (2-7-1, 2-4-1) at home.

Jacob Hehn (50 free, 100 fly) and Vincenzo Valentine (diving, 100 breast) each won two individual events and were on two of Tamaqua’s three winning relays. Brandon Temarantz (500 free) and William Behun (100 back) picked up an individual event victory and were on two winning relays as well.

Ethan Miller (200 free, 100 free) won two events for Schuylkill Haven.

Blue Mountain 129, North Schuylkill 49

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Sage Kaplafka broke the North Schuylkill pool record in the 100 freestyle as the Eagles won their 108th straight Schuylkill League dual meet with a victory over the Spartans.

Kaplafka was clocked in 56.42 in the 100 free, breaking the previous mark of 56.62. She also won the 50 freestyle and swam on a winning relay as the Eagles (9-1, 8-0) won 11 of 12 events.

Alayna Hensel (100 fly, 100 breast), Julia Crossen (500 free), Molly Stone (200 IM), Isabella Lafko (100 back) and Hailey Scheuer (diving) added victories for Blue Mountain, which swept all three relays.

Kamryn Wolfe took first in the 200 freestyle for North Schuylkill (4-5, 3-5).

Tamaqua 102, Schuylkill Haven 70

TAMAQUA — The Blue Raiders’ Savannah Wilson and the Hurricanes’ Hope Stauffer are two names you see on the top of the results each week.

They went head-to-head in a pair of races Tuesday in Tamaqua’s victory, with the two standouts each gaining a victory.

First, Stauffer (2:21.58) downed Wilson (2:23.77) in the 200 IM. They battled again in the 100 breaststroke, with Wilson (1:11.97) defeating Stauffer (1:16.32).

Katie Behun (200 free, 50 free) and Audrey Nattress (100 fly, 100 back) were double winners as Tamaqua (9-2, 6-1) defeated the Hurricanes (6-4, 3-4) at home. Lyla Clemson (500 free) added a win for the Raiders.

Taylor Fitzpatrick (diving) and Cali Stauffer (100 free) notched wins for the Hurricanes.

MAHANOY CITY — Lillian Brown (200 free), Lexi Chilinskas (200 IM) and Maresia Abadia (500 free) garnered individual wins as the Golden Bears picked up their first dual-meet win of the season by edging the Fillies.

That trio combined with Urijah Fazio to give Mahanoy Area (1-7, 1-7) wins in two relays, which proved to be the difference.

Marian (1-6, 1-6) won five individual events, with Lydia Strucko (50 free, 100 fly) and Zoe Katona (100 free, 100 breast) each winning twice and Delaney Erickson taking the 200 free.
