High School Wrestling: Pine Grove’s Kurtz wins Governor Mifflin Girls’ Holiday Tournament title

Pine Grove senior Eve Kurtz won the gold at 148 pounds at the Governor Mifflin Girls' Holiday Tournament.

SHILLINGTON — Pine Grove’s Eve Kurtz topped Tulpehocken’s Katalyna Borreli 3-1 on Saturday to capture the 148-pound championship at the Governor Mifflin Girls’ Holiday Tournament.

Kurtz, a senior, went 3-0 with two falls en route to the gold at the two-day event.

The Cardinals finished fifth in a field of 21 with 99 points. McCaskey won the team title with 195 points, followed by Parkland (168), Gettysburg (144) and Souderton (122.5).

Pine Grove finished with eight placewinners.

Geanna Lemke (142) took second place and Rieleigh Purcell (190) finished fourth. Samantha Eisenhauer (136) placed fifth; Taylor Bast (130) and Renee Eisenhauer (155) finished sixth; and Zofia Fegley (170) and Audrey Graeff (190) took eighth for the Cardinals.

Dawgs take 3rd at Mifflin

SHILLINGTON — Getting runner-up performances from Owen Wolfgang (107) and Noah Hanlon (152), Tri-Valley placed third in a 23-team field at the Governor Mifflin Boys’ Holiday Tournament.

Souderton won the team title with 197 points. Palmerton finished second with 162 points, followed by Tri-Valley (144), Cape Henlopen, Delaware (143) and Manheim Township (127). Pine Grove finished 10th.

In the finals, Wolfgang dropped a 9-2 decision to Brandywine Heights’ Asher Oman. Hanlon advanced on a disqualification in the semifinals but was unable to compete in the finals. Palmerton’s Derek King took the win on the medical forfeit.

Jaxson Bruso (133) added a fourth-place finish, while Hunter Updegrave (172) and Max Masser (189) took fifths for the Dawgs.

For Pine Grove, Austin Martin (160) earned bronze, pinning Halifax’s Curtis Conrad in 51 seconds in the third-place bout.

Robbie Schaeffer (215) and Scout Frantz (285) took fourth; Aaron Osatchuck (130) placed sixth; and Isaiah Miller (145) and Zach Kurtz (189) finished eighth for the Cardinals.

Spartans place 4th at Jim Thorpe

JIM THORPE — Earning eight placewinners, North Schuylkill wrestled to a fourth-place finish at the 26-team Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament.

Wallenpaupack captured the team title with 277 points. Hughesville (220.5) finished second, with Abington Heights (200), North Schuylkill (168) and Pen Argyl (164.5) completing the top five. Tamaqua placed 10th, Pottsville 13th, Mahanoy Area 14th and Panther Valley 26th.

Nate Sterner, North Schuylkill.

Nate Sterner (145) led the Spartans with a second-place effort. Sterner won four straight matches before Pen Argyl’s Luca Albanese pinned him in the finals in 1:57.

Gaige Mentusky (107) placed third, avenging a loss earlier in the tournament. For bronze, Mentusky shut out Pottsville’s Cole Cook 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Cook pinned Mentusky in 3:40. Mentusky posted a 6-1 record over the two-day event.

Alex Deritis (114) and Sander Stokes (285) finished fifth for the Spartans. Other placewinners included Cadyn McGraw (215) in sixth, Bryce Kile (139) and Jaden Meyer (172) in seventh and Stanley Padakowski (127) in eighth place.

For Pottsville, Terrell McFarland (172) placed third; Cook (107) finished fourth; and Chris Dembinsky (121) and Colin Kline (133) took eighth. McFarland fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Brian Heard of Abington Heights but rebounded with a fall, then a 19-3 technical fall in 2:46 over East Stroudsburg South’s Ivan Laubaach for the bronze.

Tamaqua had three placewinners. Aiden Schlier (127) finished second, going 4-0 before dropping a 16-0 technical fall in 2:00 to Abington Heights’ Mason Whitney in the finals. Evan Temarantz (133) placed fifth, and Bradley Whalen (172) took sixth for the Blue Raiders.

Kyler Quick, Mahanoy Area.

Kyler Quick (189) turned in a silver-medal effort for Mahanoy Area. Quick won five straight bouts until Wallenpaupack’s Conan Kier pinned him in the finals in 2:51. Jah Bushati (152) added a fifth-place medal for the Golden Bears.

For Panther Valley, Cameron Rolon (152) placed eighth.

Upper Dauphin’s Eoghan Savage captured the 285-pound crown, pinning Shamokin’s Robert Whitmer in 1:46 in the finals. Savage won all four of his matches by fall.

Eagles’ Woll makes semis

BETHLEHEM — Blue Mountain’s Owen Woll won three bouts to reach the semifinals on Day 1 of the 33-team Hurricane Wrestling Classic at Bethlehem Liberty High School.

Woll, down to 152 pounds for the first time this season, posted a 12-3 major decision over Gavin Caleta of Phillipsburg (New Jersey) in the quarterfinals.

Hunter Blankenhorn (172) and Bradley Renninger (189) reached the quarterfinals before dropping bouts. They will continue in the consolations.

The tournament concludes today.
