Basketball Roundup: Miners boys knock off previously unbeaten Mount Carmel

MOUNT CARMEL — Shazier Bethea scored a game-high 20 points as Minersville knocked off previously unbeaten and state-ranked Mount Carmel 54-49 in a non-league boys’ basketball game Monday.
Bethea had nine of his points in the third quarter as Minersville rallied to overcome a 25-19 halftime deficit by outscoring the Red Tornadoes 21-17 in the third frame. In the fourth, Dante Carr had six of his 10 points and Bradley Kostishak tallied four of his eight points as Minersville closed the game on a 14-7 run.
Jude Lazicki and Jaylen Delaney each had 14 for Mount Carmel, which was held under 55 points for the first time this season. The Red Tornadoes compete in Class 4A this season.

PINE GROVE — Trey Porter scored eight of his 14 points in the final quarter as the Dawgs rallied past the Cardinals in a non-league thriller.
Owen Miller had 18 points and Braeden Doyle scored 11 for Tri-Valley, which outscored Pine Grove 23-19 in the fourth quarter. The Dawgs did it from the line, shooting 9-for-13 from the stripe in the final stanza.
Chase Sarge paced four players in double figures with 18 points for Pine Grove, which led 30-25 at halftime and 42-40 after three frames. Hayden Felty added 15 points, Quinn Brommer tallied 12 and Wyatt Snyder netted 10.

POTTSVILLE — A tough second quarter put the Crimson Tide in a hole they couldn’t quite dig out of in a non-league loss to the Tigers at Martz Hall.
Christian Alvarez scored a team-high 19 points for Pottsville, while Ryder Bowers drained five 3-pointers for 15 points and Letrel Montone added 12. The Tide led 18-15 after one quarter before Northwestern Lehigh went on a 14-5 run to take a 29-23 halftime lead.
The Tigers extended that lead in the second half, although Pottsville trailed by four points late in the fourth before Northwestern Lehigh iced the game over the final minutes.
Gavin Nelson had 22 points and Shane Marth tallied 17 for the Tigers, while Brady Krimmel added 10. Northwestern Lehigh still hasn’t lost a game in the major boys’ sports this school year (football, soccer, basketball, wrestling).

HAMBURG — The Hurricanes overcame a 12-point deficit late in the third quarter to take the lead with two minutes left but couldn’t keep it going down the stretch in a non-league road loss to the Hawks.
Brady Kelly led Schuylkill Haven with 18 points, while Justin Watcher added 15, Alan Evans tallied 13 and Max Heim scored 12. All of Heim’s points came in the second half.
Ty Werley led Hamburg with 23 points, while Ricky Clark netted 20.

POTTSVILLE — Natalie Conner and Cara Thomas combined to score 23 points in a 25-2, second-quarter run that lifted Northwestern Lehigh to a non-league win over the Crimson Tide at Martz Hall.
Jo Barnhart scored a team-high 17 points for Pottsville, which led 16-12 after one quarter. The Tigers took over from there, using the big second-quarter outburst to forge a 37-18 halftime lead and never looked back.
Thomas finished with a game-high 29 points and Conner had 19 for Northwestern Lehigh, which has won 10 straight games.
