Girls’ Basketball Roundup: Marian’s outside shooting bombs Lourdes

COAL TOWNSHIP — What was supposed to be a Schuylkill League Division II girls’ basketball backyard brawl Tuesday evening turned into an all-out assault.
Marian looked like a fine-tuned machine, knocking down 10 3-pointers en route to a 76-46 road rout of Lourdes.
The Fillies (5-1, 3-0 D-II) had four players reach double figures, led by Addy Fritz’s 18 points on six 3-pointers. Five of those triples came in the second half.
Olivia Serfass kick-started the Marian offense early and finished with 17 points, while Deanna Pugh also tallied 17 points and freshman Addy Marek tallied 11.
“We love the up-tempo game,” Serfass said. “When we get into that (rhythm) we are all on the same page. By starting the game with intensity, we find the openings on their (zone) defense.”
Pugh is the key to the engine. The sophomore finds ways to disrupt the opposing team. Her quickness and having a knack to puncture the opposition with steals can be a pain in the asparagus. She helped to force Lourdes into an unsightly 26 turnovers.

Marian opened the game on a 13-0 run as Serfass dominated. She had six points in the early run and scored 13 of her points in the first half.
Lourdes (4-2, 2-2) never recovered from the opening joust. Though the Red Raiders sliced the deficit to 15-10 at one point, the energy was all around the Fillies. They exploded to a 30-20 lead with 1:45 to go in the first half.
Lourdes’ size, with 6-foot-2 sophomore Hannah Lokitis and 5-10 Vivian Reiprish, were a concern for Marian coming in. Lokitis finished with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Anna Keer added eight points and six boards.
The Fillies, however, were able to combat the Raiders’ size advantage by playing their up-tempo game and at their pace.
“We knew their size was going to be a something we had to contain,” Marian coach Damian Fritz said. “What a great pace in that first half, both teams up and down. We wanted that type of tempo, that’s something that we like to do and when we get that going we are a tough basketball team.”
That showing impressed Lourdes legendary coach Mike Klembara.
“They’re a very good team, they’ve got some size, they shoot very well and play defense,” Klembara said. “I tried to find a positive for our girls … I told them there were only two teams that scored as many points as we did (against them); us and Lake-Lehman which beat them.”
