High School Wrestling: North Schuylkill edges Tri-Valley
North Schuylkill's Jaden Meyer contributed a win by decision in the Spartans' 36-31 victory over Tri-Valley on Tuesday night.
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — North Schuylkill and Tri-Valley added another chapter to their storied wrestling rivalry Tuesday night.
Trailing by one point entering the final bout at 114 pounds, the Spartans’ Alex Deritis pinned Garrett Leitzel in 4:39 to lift North Schuylkill over Tri-Valley 36-31 in a non-league dual meet at Cesari-Hope Gymnasium.
The teams split the contested bouts 6-6, with the Spartans (3-0) picking up one forfeit for a 7-6 edge over the Bulldogs (4-2).
Close throughout, the dual meet featured three lead changes and three ties. Both squads did lots of lineup juggling, moving some of their top wrestlers up in weight to create favorable matchups and opportunities for bonus points.
After Connor Hoover started the night with a forfeit for North Schuylkill at 121 pounds, Tri-Valley’s Brock Bossler (127) answered by pinning Easton Edwards in 5:47 for a 6-6 tie.
Stanley Padakowski (133) put the Spartans back on top by stopping Kian Gill by fall in 2:59.
Once again, Tri-Valley knotted the dual as Jaxson Bruso (139) pinned Kaden Tavares in 4:55.
Bryce Kile (145) pushed North Schuylkill back into the lead when he pinned Kayden Lucas in 22 seconds.
Back came the Bulldogs, as Noah Hanlon (152) stopped Jeremiah Martinez in 30 seconds to forge an 18-18 tie after six bouts.
North Schuylkill’s Nate Sterner, who has wrestled at 145 this season, bumped up to 160 and pinned Parker Hatter in 3:39.
Tri-Valley’s Hunter Updegrave (172) answered with a technical fall, defeating Ben Carr 21-5 in 4:50. The Dawgs trailed 24-23 after eight weights.
North Schuylkill’s Jaden Meyer (189) also shifted up a weight and turned back Owen Fortna with a 7-1 decision.
In a huge swing bout at 215, the Spartans’ Cadyn McGraw topped Max Masser 5-2 in sudden victory to extend North Schuylkill’s lead to 30-22 with three bouts to go. The Dawgs had one team point deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Tri-Valley pushed back when Donovan Keeth moved up to 285 and topped Sander Stokes 6-4. Owen Wolfgang (107) followed by pinning Gaige Mentusky in 2:36. That gave the Dawgs a 31-30 edge heading into the final bout.
Deritis then got the job done against Leitzel to clinch the victory for North Schuylkill.
Both teams will be in action again tonight in Schuylkill League dual meets. North Schuylkill hosts Tamaqua in Division I, while Tri-Valley travels to Mahanoy Area in Division II.
