Girls’ Basketball: Marian, Williams Valley notch key Division II victories

MAHANOY CITY — Marian’s balance was too much for Mahanoy Area to handle.
Olivia Serfass and Addy Fritz each scored 17 points as Marian downed Mahanoy Area 62-36 in a Schuylkill League Division II girls’ basketball clash of unbeatens Friday night at the Joe Alansky Gymnasium.
Deanna Pugh tallied 14 points and Addy Marek added 12 as the Fillies (4-1, 2-0 D-II) put four players in double figures. That quartet scored all of the points in a 22-6, game-opening run that set the tone. Serfass then got hot in the second half, scoring 13 points to help the Fillies pull away.
Naomi Kowalick hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points to lead Mahanoy Area.

TOWER CITY — Mallory Miller scored a game-high 15 points as the Vikings downed the Red Raiders in a battle of Division II unbeatens.
Miller scored 10 of her points in the first half as Williams Valley built a 19-10 advantage. Sage Smeltz added 11 for the Vikes, while Quin Smeltz and Ireland Kasper combined for 11 points in the fourth quarter to help ice it.
Hannah Lokitus was the only Red Raider to reach double figures, scoring 14.

PINE GROVE — Callee Leffler led a trio of double-digit scorers with 18 points as the Cardinals downed the Panthers in a Division I game.
Leffler hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the first quarter to put Pine Grove ahead. Addie Zimmerman then scored eight of her 15 points in a key 22-9, second-quarter run that allowed the Cards to pull away. Hollyn Sampson scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half.
Morgan Orsulak paced Panther Valley with 16 points, while Natalie Vermillion hit four 3-pointers and collected 14 points.

MINERSVILLE — Mya Conti tallied 14 points and Gianna Capone added 12 as the Spartans rolled to a Division I victory over the Miners at the Thomas Fitzpatrick Gymnasium.
Conti had nine of her points in the first quarter as North Schuylkill opened the game on a 26-8 run. The Spartans led 38-14 at intermission.
Ayla Castle scored nine points to pace Minersville.

Donovan scored eight points in the first half as Shenandoah Valley built a 24-17 halftime lead. Tufts scored eight in the fourth, hitting 4-of-6 from the line.
Faith Artz scored 14 points and Ava Snyder tallied 10 for Tri-Valley, which was hampered by a 3-for-14 effort from the foul line.

Reiner shot 12-for-14 from the foul line, scoring 10 points in a 12-5, first-quarter run that put Weatherly ahead to stay. Reiner was the only player in the game to score more than five points. Finley McNamara led Nativity with five points.
