Weekend Roundup: Haven boys capture Upper Dauphin tourney title

ELIZABETHVILLE —- Alan Evans scored 54 points over two games to lead Schuylkill Haven to the championship of the Upper Dauphin Tip-Off Tournament held Friday and Saturday at Upper Dauphin High School.
Evans, a sophomore point guard, drained five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 31 points Friday as the Hurricanes downed Mt. Calvary Christian 79-56. Evans had 16 points in the first half as Haven built a 47-28 lead at intermission.
Max Heim added 22 points, 17 in the first half, while Brady Kelly added 12. The win advanced Schuylkill Haven to Saturday’s championship against Upper Dauphin, which beat Northumberland Christian 41-39 in the other game Friday.
Saturday, the Hurricanes overcame foul trouble with a fourth-quarter rally to beat the host Trojans 51-48.
Upper Dauphin used 17 of Ethan Groff’s 23 points in the first half to build a 31-23 lead. Schuylkill Haven finished with two players fouling out and two others with four fouls. The Trojans went to the line 28 times in the game, hitting 18.
Upper Dauphin led 39-32 entering the fourth before Schuylkill Haven rallied. Evans tallied 12 of his team-high 23 points, while Kelly hit a key 3-pointer, Justin Watcher had a pair of free throws and Matt Lucas came off the bench and added a bucket. The Hurricanes closed the game on a 19-9 run.

TOWER CITY — Tanner Zawada tallied a game-high 25 points and Jace Yedsena added 16 as the Golden Bears rolled past the Vikings in a non-league game Saturday afternoon.
Zawada and Yedsena combined for 16 points and William Mayberry added a pair of 3-pointers in a 24-9, first-quarter run that put Mahanoy Area ahead for good. Zawada added seven more points and Aiden Bowman canned two triples in the second quarter as Mahanoy Area took a 43-19 halftime lead.
Brady Shomper and Kian Krzyzanowski each had eight points to pace Williams Valley.
