HS Swimming: Marian teams make history with 1st Schuylkill League victories

MAHANOY CITY — The Marian swim teams made school history Thursday night.

Both the Colts and Fillies notched the first Schuylkill League victories in program history with wins over Mahanoy Area.

On the girls’ side, Lydia Strucko and Zoe Katona each won two individual events and swam on two winning relays as Marian edged Mahanoy Area 58-47.

On the boys’ side, Michael Strucko and Andrew Metters each won two events as the Colts downed the Golden Bears 54-15.

Last season was Marian’s first as a competitive dual-meet team. Marian competed as an independent, with the girls going 2-8 and the boys compiling a 1-8-1 mark.

This is their first season as an official Schuylkill League dual-meet team.

Thursday, Lydia Strucko took first in the 200-yard IM and 100 butterfly, while Katona won the 200 freesetyle and 100 breaststroke. Delaney Erickson added a win in the 100 backstroke.

Lillian Brown (50 free) and Urijah Fazio (100 free) won events and teamed on the Bears’ winning 200 freestyle relay team.

For the boys, Michael Strucko took first in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle while Metters won the 50 free and 100 back. Blake Brown earned Mahanoy Area’s only win by taking first in the 100 butterfly.

ORWIGSBURG — Julia Crossen (200 free, 500 free), Alayna Hensel (200 IM, 100 fly) and Sage Kaplafka (50 free, 100 free) each won two events and swam on two winning relays as the Eagles downed the Spartans.

Hailey Scheuer (diving), Isabella Lafko (100 back) and Molly Stone (100 breast) added individual wins for Blue Mountain, which swept all 12 events.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Savannah Wilson won two individual events and swam on two winning relays as the Blue Raiders outlasted the Hurricanes.

Wilson won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke for Tamaqua, while Isabella Jones (500 free) and Audrey Nattress (100 back) notched wins. The Blue Raiders won four of the final five events, sweeping the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

Nikki Domermuth (200 free, 100 fly) and Cali Stauffer (50 free, 100 free) each won twice for Schuylkill Haven, while Taylor Fitzpatrick took first in diving.

ORWIGSBURG — Liam Magdeburg (200 free, 500 free), Porter Sarnes (200 IM, 100 fly), Brody Moyer (100 free, 100 back) and Noah Powers (50 free, 100 breast) each won two individual events and swam on winning relays as the Eagles beat the Spartans.

Blue Mountain won all 11 contested events.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — The Blue Raiders and Hurricanes ended in a deadlock when the Tamaqua foursome of Thomas Graham, Logan Morgans, Ben Hunsicker and Vinny Valentine captured the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

Ethan Miller (100 fly, 100 back) won two individual events and swam on two winning relays for Schuylkill Haven, while Bruce Stine won the 200 freestyle.

Valentine (diving, 100 breast) was a double-winner for Tamaqua, while Graham (50 free), Hunsicker (100 free) and Morgans (500 free) added individual wins.
