12 enshrined in Allen-Rogowicz Hall of Fame
The Tubby Allen-Chet Rogowicz Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame held its 43rd annual induction and honors banquet Sunday.
The banquet inducted 12 new members into the Southern Schuylkill County chapter, which covers the Blue Mountain, Minersville, Nativity, Pine Grove, Pottsville, Saint Clair, Schuylkill Haven, Tri-Valley and Williams Valley school districts. This year’s inductees will be added to the Hall of Honor located on the upper level of Martz Hall.
This year’s inductees include:
Michael Farr
Farr is a 1983 graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School. He went on to Penn State University on a baseball scholarship. In 1985, he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the fourth round and played professional baseball until 1989.
Farr began coaching football at Schuylkill Haven in 1986 during his baseball offseason. In 1990, he became a full-time football coach at Schuylkill Haven. He has more than 38 seasons of coaching and 18 as the head coach. As an assistant coach, the Hurricanes won a state championship in 1991. During his tenure, the Hurricanes have won 29 league, conference and district championships. His teams have won 10 District 11 titles and three Eastern Conference crowns.
He is actively involved in the football community, serving as a past president of the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association and is the PSFCA East Executive Manager. Farr is also the president of the Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association.
Farr resides in Lake Wynonah with his wife, Amy. He has three daughters, Ashley, Nicole and Amanda. He also has two grandchildren, Stella and KJ.
William J. Flynn, IV
Flynn was born at Pottsville Hospital on Aug. 21, 1959. While disruptive to summer football practices at Pottsville High School, his parents (Coach Bill Flynn and Marie Flynn) were nonetheless happy to welcome home their third child of six.
He graduated from Pottsville Area High School in 1978, earning 10 letters total in football, wrestling and track and field. He was a quarterback and linebacker on PAHS football teams that lost just five games over three seasons. He was a member of the 1976 Southern Division championship team.
During his senior year, he was All-Regional, All-Anthracite, All-Southern Division, All-County and honorable mention All-State.
In wrestling, he was a District 11 runner-up in 1977.
In his senior year, he earned honors as Scholar Athlete and Outstanding Athlete for the PAHS Class of 1978.
He was recruited by the U.S. Naval Academy for both wrestling and football but chose football. He played quarterback his plebe year and switched to linebacker in subsequent years. He served as an assistant coach to George Welsh and lettered his senior year. During his time at Navy, the football team went 31-15-1, beating Army three years in a row and qualifying for two bowl games.
With a degree in mechanical engineering, Flynn was selected for the Navy Nuclear Power Program and volunteered for the U.S. Submarine Force. He was the Navy Nuclear Power Officer and ROTC instructor at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a Master’s degree. He served on multiple submarines before receiving orders to the Pentagon.
All told, he served 26 years in both active and civilian service in the Navy. He was then recruited by a satellite communications company, supporting the U.S. Government and reaching the Corporate Vice President level.
After settling in Burke, Virginia, with wife (Christine) and two children (John and Kelly Anne), he volunteered as a youth coach, supporting his children’s football, basketball, baseball and wrestling teams. He was subsequently recruited to start the Braddock Wrestling Club, part of the Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation. Now in its 16th season, the BWC is the largest wrestling club in the NVFW and has produced state champions and college wrestlers.
Bobbi-Jo (Horst) Ramsey
(Horst) Ramsey graduated from Pine Grove Area in 1996. She then attended Campbell University (1996-98) before graduating from Barton College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
During high school, she was a trailblazer for girls’ soccer by playing on the boys’ soccer team. That eventually led to Schuylkill County schools adding girls’ soccer as a varsity sport. She was a varsity starter all four years on the boys’ team, which went 60-24-1 and was captain her senior year. She received All-State female honors in 1995 and continued her soccer career at Division I Campbell before injuries cut short her career.
She was a four-year starter in girls’ basketball and captain and point guard in an overtime win in the PIAA Class AA state championship game in 1996 in Hershey. In her career, she scored more than 1,000 points. Her teams won three District 11 championships, and she finished with multiple honors, including second-team All-State.
(Horst) Ramsey has been married to Jeff Ramsey for 25 years and has four children. She has been a nurse for 23 years and works for Wake Med on their pediatric critical care transport team.
David Horst
Horst, a 2004 Pine Grove Area graduate, was a four-time letter winner in soccer and basketball.
In soccer, his many awards included first-team All-State (2003) and Schuylkill League Player of the Year (2003). He was first-team All-Schuylkill League in basketball.
Horst continued his soccer career at Division I Old Dominion University, where he was a two-time Colonial Athletic Conference Defender of the Year and a second-team All-American by College Soccer News.
He was selected in the first round (No. 14 overall) in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake in 2008 and had a long professional career that spanned 11 years with various teams. During his time in MLS, Horst amassed more than 200 appearances, played in the CONCACAF Champions League and received multiple MLS Team of the Week Awards.
Horst resides in Medford, Oregon, with wife of nine years and two children.
Steven Horst
Horst played soccer and basketball at Pine Grove Area from 1994-97.
A four-year starter for the boys’ soccer team, he holds the boys’ school record for goals in a career (107), goals in a single season (49) and career points (261). His numerous honors included Schuylkill League MVP, Scholar Athlete and first-team All-State.
In basketball, he was a 1,000-point scorer and led the Schuylkill League in scoring during the 1996-97 season at more than 22 points per game. His honors included Schuylkill League MVP and first-team All-State. He continued his basketball career at Lebanon Valley College, winning numerous championships, and receiving NABC second-team All-America and Academic All-America honors as well. Named to the MAC All-Century team, he is still in the top team all-time at LVC for career points (1,608) and rebounds (637).
When his playing career ended, he was an assistant coach for the Elizabethtown High School boys’ basketball team that won two Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 titles.
After graduating from Villanova Law School, Horst lives in Mount Joy with his wife and three children, works as an attorney for Fulton Bank and has run the Donegal youth basketball program for the last seven years. In 2018, he was honored by the Central Penn Business Journal as a 40 under 40 Rising Leader in Central Pennsylvania.
Capt. Jason Jones
Captain Jason Jones, 1st Battalion, 3rd Group Special Forces Team, U.S. Army, was killed in action on June 2, 2014, near Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Jones graduated from Blue Mountain High School in 2003, 16th in his class while earning eight varsity letters in soccer, basketball and football. In soccer, he was named first-team All-American for the Eastern Region of Pennsylvania. Among his many awards, he was voted into the Blue Mountain Athletic Hall of Fame prior to his death, but the announcement did not occur until after his death.
Jones chose to attend the United States Military Academy and graduated sixth in his class in 2007 with a degree in nuclear engineering and collected numerous awards, including receiving his diploma from then Vice President Richard Cheney.
Upon graduation, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He earned the Iron Panther Award and graduated from the Army Jumpmaster School in 2010. He then was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq for one year in 2008-09.
Upon his return from Iraq, Jones graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in May 2013 and was awarded the Green Beret. He then was assigned Captain of the 3rd Group Special Forces Team before being deployed to Afghanistan in April 2014.
In his personal life, he married Amy Weniger at West Point on June 15, 2013. The couple resided very happily in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with their rescue dog, Molly. Jones was an avid fly fisherman and loved the outdoors.
His many military awards include two Bronze Star Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Purple Heart.
Jones’ name has been placed on the Wall of Honor of the Physics Laboratory at West Point and will be placed on the Memorial Wall of Honor there as well.
Jones was honored in 2019 by the U.S. Army and the members of the 3rd and 7th Special Forces Group, Mission Support Squadrons, by naming a base of Special Forces Operations located in Southern Nangarhar Province in Afghanistan after him, the “MSS Jones.’’
Matthew Melusky
Melusky is a 2001 graduate of Minersville Area High School, where he was a standout in football, basketball and baseball.
In football, his senior year he was the leading receiver with nine touchdowns and intercepted seven passes as the Battlin’ Miners completed an undefeated regular season.
In baseball, Melusky was team captain, scored 13 points per game and averaged double digits in rebounds on a District 11 championship team that reached the state quarterfinals.
In baseball, he carried a .350 batting average, leading the Miners to the District 11 finals. In 2001, he was selected as the Miners Athlete of the Year.
A 2006 graduate of Pennsylvania College of Technology with three degrees, Melusky played basketball for three years and scored 714 points and led the team in rebounds in his senior year. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
He is a certified black belt level two in Ju-Jitsu/Judo.
Melusky is a civil engineer for Supreme Industry and is leading the installation of power lines from New Jersey to New York. He resides in the Minersville Area with his wife, Holly.
Nicholas Melusky
Melusky is a 2005 graduate of Minersville Area High School, excelling in football, basketball and baseball.
In football, Melusky was a three-year starter at quarterback, guiding the Miners to the District 11 championship in 2003. In 2004, he surpassed 1,000 yards passing and earned numerous awards, including the Terry Case MVP of the annual football coaches all-star game.
In basketball, he served as team captain.
In baseball, he started for three years, playing various positions. In 2005, Melusky was selected as the Miners Athlete of the Year.
Melusky is a 2010 graduate of Shippensburg University with a degree in Supply Chain Management. At Ship, he started for two seasons at strong safety and played on the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship team. He finished that year with 47 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
He coaches his son’s sports teams and is a PIAA basketball official.
Melusky works for Swift Transportation as a Regional Operations Manager overseeing six office employees and 85 drivers. He lives in the Minersville area with his wife, Samantha, and sons Beau and Burke.
Ashley Miller
Miller is a 2003 graduate of Tri-Valley High School where she lettered for four years as a pitcher on the softball team.
Miller then went to East Stroudsburg University, earning a dual bachelor’s degree in regular education and special education, along with a minor in psychology. She then earned a Master’s degree in Education from Alvernia University and later earned a principal certificate from Alvernia.
Her numerous softball awards included Republican Herald Rookie of the Year, first-team pitcher and Co-Player of the Year.
In her career, she had 49 wins, 581 strikeouts, 30 shutouts, three perfect games, 18 strikeouts in a game and an overall ERA of 0.64. In 2002, Miller led Tri-Valley to its first District 11 championship.
Miller has been a member of the Tri-Valley School District faculty for 17 years, dedicating 15 years to teaching as a learning support teacher before assuming her current role as Director of Special Education.
Miller resides in Hegins with her husband, Brian.
Jeffrey Reading
Reading, a 1988 graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School, excelled in football, basketball and baseball.
He led the team in hits, runs and pitching wins during his senior season. He was named an All-Area Division II second baseman.
Following high school, Reading attended East Stroudsburg University where he continued to play baseball as a pitcher. At ESU, he earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.
For 25 years, he has worked as a health and physical education teacher in the Tamaqua Area School District. For the past 23 years, he has been head baseball coach at Tamaqua, leading the team to 271-209 record. His teams have qualified for districts 15 times, won the Schuylkill League three times, secured four District 11 championships and achieved a PIAA Class AA runner-up finish.
Reading is the father of daughters, Bailee and Avery, whom he raised in Schuylkill Haven.
Samantha Snukis
Snukis, a 2004 graduate of Nativity BVM High School, earned 12 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track and field.
In basketball, she excelled as a defender and rebounder on teams that secured one District 11 gold and three state championship runner-up medals.
In volleyball, she contributed to multiple league and district championships and a trip to the state playoffs.
Snukis shone in track and field, becoming the first female athlete from Nativity to win a state championship as an individual in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. She also has a seventh-place medal in the 400 meters and a fourth-place medal in the 4×800-meter relay at states.
Snukis went to Division I Wagner College, where she competed in the 400 hurdles and 800 meters. She won the NEC conference title in the 800 and qualified for the Division I Championships in Tallahassee, Florida.
She earned a Master’s degree in microbiology while coaching track and field at Wagner.
Later, she transitioned to distance running, winning the Delaware State Marathon in 2016 and qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2019 with a time of 2:44. Snukis then became a professional in triathlons and continues to compete at the pro level.
Snukis was accepted into the Physician Assistant program at New York University, graduating in 2014. She works in Lancaster as a sports medicine and orthopedic trauma physician assistant at Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, where she examines and diagnoses trauma patients in the hospital, guiding them on their path to recovery.
Christina Thompson Harner
Thompson Harner, a 2003 graduate of Williams Valley High School, excelled in basketball, scoring 1,932 points and amassing 1,105 rebounds and becoming a team leader.
Her dedication wasn’t confined to game days. She actively participated in community programs, engaging with fans, and becoming a positive role model for aspiring young athletes.
The #55 jersey was retired in her honor. That symbolizes not just the statistical achievements, All-Area and All-State selections, but also the enduring legacy of a player whose dedication left a lasting impact on the Williams Valley basketball program, shaping its culture and inspiring future generations of athletes.
She resides in Harrisburg with her husband, Nick, and her children, Enzley, Evelyn and Macklin.
