PINE GROVE — There should be no doubt Williams Valley is playoff-ready.
The Vikings, the likely No. 1 or 2 seed for the eight-team District 11 Class AA postseason tournament, closed out their regular season Friday night with a 56-14 mauling of Pine Grove in a Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division matchup at Cardinal Stadium.
On the way to the victory, Williams Valley (9-1, 8-1 Blue) had six first-half possessions and turned all six into touchdowns for a 42-0 lead at the break.
The Vikings piled up 418 yards of total offense. Amazingly, 258 of that total came on seven scoring plays from scrimmage, only one of those less than 19 yards, while the other five were from 30 yards out or more. Add to that an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by freshman Fletcher Thompson, and the total becomes even more impressive.
Junior quarterback Brady Shomper had a terrific night, connecting on 8-of-11 passes for 258 yards. He fired five touchdown passes, including two of 30 and 79 yards to wideout Kian Krzyzanowski, a 55-yarder to Evan Achenbach, a 34-yarder to Thompson and one from six yards out to Brayden Crisswell.
Thompson managed a trifecta, adding a 19-yard scoring run, giving him one on the ground, one through the air and one on a kickoff return. Achenbach had a 35-yard rushing touchdown, giving him one on the ground and one through the air.
The Vikes also had a pair of players enter their name in the program’s record book. Senior kicker Sage Smeltz was successful on all eight of her extra-point attempts, giving her 51 on the season, surpassing the previous single-season record of 44 established by Kaila Deitrich.
Krzyzanowski, with his 116-yard receiving performance, joined O.J. Grow and Owen Daniel as the only three Vikings to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.
Pine Grove (1-9, 1-8 Blue) scored once in the third quarter and once in the fourth.
Both came through the air, with quarterback Wyatt Snyder connecting with Robbie Schaeffer from one yard out in the third quarter, then hitting Brody Ibarra from 43 yards out in the fourth quarter.
