HEGINS — Schuylkill Haven head coach Mike Farr made a request.
“I asked my guys to get on the throttle right away,’’ Farr said. “Let’s force the action, and I thought we did that.’’
Now there’s an understatement.
Scoring on their first seven possessions, the Hurricanes rolled past Tri-Valley 66-16 in a Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division game Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. Schuylkill Haven (9-1, 9-0 Blue) also scored a defensive touchdown, a TD on special teams and converted six 2-point conversion runs to lead 16-0 after the first quarter and 54-0 at halftime.
Battering ram Niko Carestia did what he does every week, rushing 12 times for 167 yards and TD runs of 7, 8 and 21 yards. Carestia, a junior, had a 2-point conversion run and a strip sack as well.
Sophomore Colton Reber enjoyed a big night, too, rushing six times for 128 yards and touchdown scampers of 39, 22 and 51 yards. Reber added three 2-point conversion runs.
Senior Leyden Hertz scored twice, returning an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and returning the second-half kickoff 85 yards to the end zone.
“Playing for Haven, we’re known for not throwing the ball, but I’ve got to make the plays I get the opportunities for,’’ Hertz said.
And on the kickoff return?
“I caught the ball, saw a lane,’’ Hertz said. “I had my guy Niko Carestia blocking for me, so I knew I was taking it all the way.’’
In the first half, Schuylkill Haven rushed for 361 yards on 25 carries, an average of 14.4 yards per attempt.
The Hurricanes led 66-0 after three quarters as Schuylkill Haven’s starters watched most of the second half from the sidelines as not to risk injury heading into next week’s District 11 Class AA quarterfinal playoff game.
With its backups in the game, Tri-Valley (6-4, 5-4 Blue) scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Shawn Singh had a 5-yard TD run, and Hayze Hornung had a 32-yard, scoop-and-score fumble return.
Despite the loss, Tri-Valley’s season will continue with a District 2/11 Class A subregional playoff game against an opponent to be determined.
“We have another game next week,’’ Tri-Valley head coach Jeff Sampson said. “So I told them to forget about this one, put it in the past, and move forward. … You can’t dwell on this. It was a bad night.’’
