Williams Valley overwhelms Shenandoah Valley

WILLIAMSTOWN — Williams Valley had two things go wrong to open its Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division game against Shenandoah Valley on Friday night at Gerry Stauffenberg Field at Viking Stadium.
In the end, it didn’t matter one bit as the Vikings shook off the two miscues to post a 75-3 rout in a mercy-rule game.
The Blue Devils started strong by deferring on the opening coin toss and successfully recovering an onside kick to get the ball in excellent field position at midfield.
Although that possession went three and out, Shenandoah Valley got another break when Tristian Karosas intercepted a pass to give his team good field position once again.
The Vikings defense prevailed again and the offense took over from there. They didn’t stop until 11 touchdowns were scored to keep the Blue Devils winless on the year.
With the win, Williams Valley kept its bid alive to earn the top seed over Schuylkill Haven in the District 11 Class 2A rankings.
“We have had some trouble in the first quarter this year just to get things going,” Williams Valley coach Stephen Sedesse said. “But once we get things going, we seem to click very well.”
The Vikings produced 590 yards of total offense with Fletcher Thompson leading the way with 170 yards rushing that included touchdown runs of 1, 45 and 37 yards.
Williams Valley had a defensive touchdown on a 75-yard interception return by Trevon Bair and one on special teams on an 82-yard kickoff return by Evan Kandybowski.
Quarterback Brady Shomper had a big day, throwing four of his nine completions for touchdowns on passes of 59 yards and 4 yards to Kian Krzyzanowski, 25 yards to Brayden Crisswell and 75 yards to Blazer Lords. He threw for 235 yards in the game.
Shomper said he tried to keep his team from looking past a team with a winless record and come out prepared regardless of the opponent. He also wanted to keep his players competitive even though the outcome was never in doubt. Especially with the postseason fast approaching.
“We need to execute and be disciplined on the football field,” Sedesse said. “If you get sloppy and lackadaisical, you could show future opponents some stuff on film you don’t want them to really see. And it’s important for seeding to get a home game. You sort of get that with the first two seeds no matter what.”
Shenandoah Valley managed to avoid being shut out when Sam Mentusky connected on a 36-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining in the game. The Blue Devils could only produce 53 yards of total offense.
Both teams will close out the regular season on the road in rivalry games as the Vikings travel to Pine Grove and the Blue Devils take on Mahanoy Area.
