North Schuylkill runs past Lehighton
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — How about this for a tone-setter.
On the first play from scrimmage, North Schuylkill’s Luke Miller swept around right end and raced 60 yards for a touchdown just 19 seconds into the game.
The Spartans were just getting started.
Scoring on 9-of-11 possessions (including a kneel-down at the end), North Schuylkill overwhelmed Lehighton 58-21 on Friday night in a Schuylkill/Colonial Red Division game at Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium.
“The guys really came out and executed a couple things that we’re pretty confident in doing,’’ North Schuylkill coach Wally Hall said. “We started fast, and then we had a little bit of a lull. Lehighton they’re coached very well.
“It was another great win,’’ Hall added. “We’ve just got to keep getting better.’’
The Spartans (6-3, 5-3 Red) gave the Homecoming crowd plenty to cheer.
* Cooper Carl and Michael Mogish intercepted passes in the first quarter to keep the momentum on North Schuylkill’s side.
* Miller finished with 214 yards rushing on 19 carries. He added a 48-yard TD run late in the third quarter on his final carry of the night.
“The holes were huge and easy to run through,’’ Miller said.
*Quarterback Caden Mengel accounted for four touchdowns. He completed 9-of-12 passes for 134 yards, including scoring tosses of 43 and 18 yards to Mogish. Mengel also ran for TDs of 1 and 5 yards.
* Senior kicker Gavin Mentzer connected on a 51-yard field goal on the final play of the first half. Mentzer also booted five kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
“It’s a great accomplishment. … He’s certainly capable of that,’’ Hall said of Mentzer’s long field goal.
Lehighton (3-6, 3-4 Red) tried to keep pace. Lucas Croizier ran 11 yards for a score and quarterback Jayse Lawrence lofted a 32-yard TD pass to Caden Meek. That cut the Indians’ deficit to 28-14 with 25.4 seconds left in the first half, but Mentzer’s field goal made it 31-14 at the break.
For the game, North Schuylkill racked up 466 yards of total offense, an average of 9.5 yards per play. Kolton Joyce scored on a 9-yard run, and reserve back Angel Ortiz raced 22 yards for the final score of the night.
“We just stuck to the game plan,’’ Mengel said. “Coming off last week (a 38-14 win over Blue Mountain), that was the standard we had to set. We came out and executed very well.’’
The regular season will wrap up next Friday night when North Schuylkill hosts Pottsville and Lehighton entertains Jim Thorpe.
