Schuylkill League Cross Cross Country Championships

When: Wednesday, Oct. 16

Where: White Birch Golf Course, Barnesville

Race times: JV boys/girls combined, 2 p.m.; varsity girls, 3 p.m.; varsity boys, 3:50 p.m.

Course length: Varsity — 3.1 miles (Course starts near green on 3rd hole, winds around the golf course and ends on an uphill near the 18th green)

2023 champions: Boys — Francesco Carr (Blue Mountain), Minersville team; girls — Anna Schaeffer (Schuylkill Haven), Tamaqua team

Notes: After many years at Tuscarora State Park, the league has seemed to find a home at White Birch. This will be the third straight year that the golf course has hosted the league meet. … The winding, criss-cross course gives fans multiple vantage points to follow the runners’ progress. … The league meet will serve as a run-off for Blue Mountain and Tamaqua to determine the Division I boys’ champion. The teams finished the regular season tied at 11-1. … Schuylkill Haven’s Anna Schaeffer will aim for her third straight girls’ league championship. A victory would put her on an exclusive list that includes three-timers Kelli Hunt (West Hazleton), Farrah Ryan (Shamokin) and Cori McCormick (North Schuylkill). Tamaqua’s Alexa Griffiths and Pottsville’s Paige Stoner are two of the three four-time league champions. Tamaqua’s Isaac Dunkelberger is the other. … On the boys’ side, Carr will try to make it two in a row and break a long-standing streak. In each of the past 10 seasons, a different boy won his respective race at leagues. Not since Jim Thorpe’s Jonathan Condly went back-to-back in 2013-14 has somebody repeated as league champion. … The District 11 Cross Country Championships will be held Oct. 23 at DeSales University … The PIAA Cross Country Championships will be held Nov. 2 at Parkview Cross Country Course, Hershey.
