WILLIAMSTOWN — It was the start Williams Valley wanted.

It was the start the Vikings felt they needed.

Scoring touchdowns on their first three offensive possessions, the Vikings rolled to a 33-0 shutout victory over Marian Catholic on Friday night in a Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division game at Gerry Stauffenberg Field at Viking Stadium.

“Marian, we watched a lot of them on film, and they played the good teams, the teams with the good records, really good,” Williams Valley defensive coordinator Mike Sedesse said. “The teams without the good records were the ones they had a little bit of trouble with.

“We wanted to come out and set the tone early. We wanted to hit, be physical and establish our game.”

The Vikings (7-1, 6-1 Blue) did that on both sides of the ball.

Defensively, they never allowed the Colts (4-4, 3-4) to get into any kind of rhythm. On the night, Marian managed only 109 yards of total offense, with only four first downs.

On eight of the Colts’ 24 running plays, the Vikes stopped the ballcarrier behind the line of scrimmage. They limited Marian to only 63 passing yards, with 58 of those coming late in the game with the outcome already decided.

Through the entire first half, the Colts never made their way into the Vikings’ end of the field. It wasn’t until late in the third quarter when backup quarterback Gregory Tirpak hit Rory Dixon with a 40-yard completion that Marian crossed the midfield stripe.

One play later, a Tirpak-to-Michael Gelatko completion had the Colts at the 15. On the next play, Trevon Bair picked off a Tirpak pass to end the threat.

Then there was Williams Valley’s offensive effort that was loaded with chunk plays.

Junior quarterback Brady Shomper had a big night, hitting on 9-of-14 passes, good for 251 yards and touchdowns of 32 and 60 yards to junior wideout Evan Achenbach, along with a 70-yarder to junior Blazer Lords.

Shomper, in his second season as the Vikes’ starting signal-caller, was nothing short of outstanding, also rushing for 50 yards, including three runs of 10 yards or more. His progression as a quarterback has been a big part of the Vikings’ success.

“We were watching film the other day and he (Shomper) said, ‘Coach, everything slowed down so much. It’s like I’m seeing everything before it happens,’ ” Sedesse said.

Freshman running back Fletcher Thompson continued his strong season, rushing for 87 yards on only 14 carries, scoring a pair of touchdowns on runs of 10 and 5 yards. Among his 14 carries, six went for 10 yards or more.

“It’s a total team here,” Sedesse said. “We run, throw the ball, get everybody involved.

“That’s what we work on at practice. We come up with plays for everybody. It’s a team game.”
