Boyer’s Bulletin: A guide to the Schuylkill League fall sports playoffs

EDITOR’S NOTE: Story updated Oct. 10 to include complete soccer and volleyball playoff brackets.

There are still three weeks remaining before the high school football playoffs begin the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 2.

For the rest of the area’s fall sports teams, the postseason is upon us.

The Schuylkill League’s “Championship Week” kicks off Saturday with four soccer quarterfinals at Blue Mountain High School’s Eagles’ Nest and continues through Thursday, Oct. 17, when champions are crowned in girls’ volleyball, girls’ soccer and boys’ soccer.

In between are action-packed contests and championship events that are sure to thrill every Schuylkill County high school sports fan.

Tickets for the soccer and volleyball playoffs are $6 for adults and $3 for students and will be cash sales at the gate/door for each contest. There is no senior citizen discount.

Here’s a breakdown of the upcoming Schuylkill League playoffs in each of the fall sports. This breakdown will be updated following final regular-season games played Thursday:

Boys’ Soccer

The Schuylkill League’s Championship Week gets under way Saturday on the pitch at the Eagles’ Nest with four soccer quarterfinal games.

Boys’ soccer bats leadoff, with games at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Pine Grove (Division I) and Shenandoah Valley (Division II) clinched their respective division championships and earned byes into Monday’s semifinals.

Blue Mountain and North Schuylkill will represent Division I as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, while Schuylkill Haven and Tri-Valley are the No. 2 and No. 3 teams from Division II.

In Saturday’s quarterfinals, North Schuylkill will take on the Schuylkill Haven at 9 a.m., followed by Blue Mountain facing Tri-Valley at 11 a.m..

The boys’ soccer semifinals are set for Monday night at Blue Mountain, with the championship game set for 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain is the defending league champion, defeating Pine Grove 4-0 in last year’s title game.

Championship, at Blue Mountain

Semifinal winners, 5 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

The Schuylkill League girls’ soccer playoffs also get under way Saturday with a pair of quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Eagles’ Nest.

Pottsville (Division I) and Schuylkill Haven (Division II) clinched their respective division championships and earned byes into Tuesday’s semifinals.

North Schuylkill and Blue Mountain will represent Division I as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. Tri-Valley and Williams Valley will represent Division II.

In Saturday’s quarterfinals, North Schuylkill faces Williams Valley at 1:30 p.m., followed by Blue Mountain taking on Tri-Valley at 3:30 p.m.

The girls’ soccer semifinals are set for Tuesday night at Blue Mountain, with the championship game set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain is the defending league champion, defeating Pottsville 2-0 in last year’s title game.

Girls’ Volleyball

The six-team Schuylkill League girls’ volleyball playoffs begin Monday with quarterfinal action at Minersville Area High School’s Thomas Fitzpatrick Gymnasium.

Pottsville (Division I) and Marian (Division II) are the champions of their respective divisions and will have a bye into Tuesday’s semifinals at Martz Hall. Panther Valley and Mahanoy Area have secured the No. 2 and No. 3 spots from Division I, while Tri-Valley and Nativity are the No. 2 and No. 3 teams from Division II.

In Monday’s quarterfinals, Panther Valley will face Nativity at 5:30 p.m. and Tri-Valley will battle Mahanoy Area at 6:45 p.m.

The Schuylkill League semifinals are set for Tuesday at Martz Hall, with Marian facing the Panther Valley/Nativity and Pottsville taking on the Tri-Valley/Mahanoy Area winner. The championship match is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday at Martz Hall.

Cross Country

The Schuylkill League Cross Country Championships will be held Wednesday, Oct. 16, at White Birch Golf Course, Barnesville. Official GPS address for the golf course is 660 Tuscarora Park Road, Barnesville, 18214

Competition gets under way with a combined boys’ and girls’ JV race at 2 p.m. The girls’ varsity race follows at 3 p.m., with the boys’ varsity race at 3:50 p.m. Awards will be presented after the last race. In the case of inclement weather, a raindate has been set for Thursday, Oct. 17, at the same time and location.

Schuylkill Haven’s Anna Schaeffer and Blue Mountain’s Francesco Carr were last year’s individual Schuylkill League champions.

The Schuylkill League boys’ and girls’ cross country dual-meet schedule concludes with a full slate of competitions Wednesday.

Schuylkill League Junior High Championships — Saturday, Oct. 12, at Pine Grove Area High School. Girls’ race at 10 a.m., boys’ race at 10:40 a.m.

District 11 Championships — Wednesday, Oct. 23, at DeSales University

PIAA Championships — Saturday, Nov. 2, at Parkview Cross Country Course, Hershey

Odds and Ends

Shout out to Blue Mountain’s Leah Walasavage and Natalie Brown, who placed third at the District 11 Class AA Girls’ Tennis Doubles Tournament held Oct. 3-4 at Lehigh University and Bethlehem Freedom High School.

Seeded fourth, Walasavage and Brown reached the semifinals before falling to top-seeded and eventual champion Madelyn Groff and Valentina Munoz of Allentown Central Catholic, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2. The duo then rebounded to win the third-place match.

Walasavage and Brown, who both reached the quarterfinals of the District 11 Class AA singles’ tournament, also helped the Eagles reach the semifinals of the District 11 Class AA Team Tournament before falling 5-0 on Tuesday to Moravian Academy.

The District 11 Hall of Fame Banquet is set for Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Delta Hotel by Marriott in Fogelsville. Former Marian/Shenandoah Valley girls’ basketball coach Paul Brutto and former Mahanoy Area girls’ basketball star Meggan Yedsena are among this year’s 14 inductees.

The Allen-Rogowicz Chapter of the Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame Banquet will follow the next Sunday, Oct. 27, at St. Nicholas Hall in Primrose.

This year’s class includes Mike Farr (Schuylkill Haven), William “Bill” Flynn (Pottsville), Christina (Thompson) Harner (Williams Valley), David Horst (Pine Grove), Steven Horst (Pine Grove), Jason Jones (Blue Mountain), Matt Melusky (Minersville), Nick Melusky (Minersville), Ashley Miller (Tri-Valley), Bobbi Jo (Horst) Ramsey (Pine Grove), Jeff Reading (Schuylkill Haven) and Samantha Snukis (Nativity).

Finally, Schuylkill Haven native and former Major League Baseball player Jake Daubert will be honored at the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame State Induction Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Drexelbrook Catering and Event Center in Drexel Hill, Delaware County.
