9 to enter Pottsville Area All Sports Hall of Fame
The annual banquet and induction ceremony for the Pottsville Area High School All Sports Hall of Fame will be held Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Pottsville Zone.
Dinner will be served at 5 p.m.

This year’s honorees include:
Jack Brennan
Brennan, a 1977 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, was a standout wrestler. He was a four-year District 11 qualifier and co-captain his senior year.
With the success of three wrestling seasons prior, Brennan’s senior year proved to be the highlight of his wrestling career. He compiled an undefeated record (18-0) in the regular season with a postseason and overall record of 23-3. He was a District 11 third-place finisher and a Northeast Regional fourth-place finisher. He was a three-time Governor Mifflin Christmas Tournament finalist and two-time champion. He was voted to the second team of the All-Anthracite All-Star wrestling team in 1977.
Brennan continued his love of wrestling by coaching for Pottsville in the Coal Cracker Wrestling League for many years.
Immediately following high school, Brennan joined the U.S. Army. He was active duty for four years and obtained the rank of sergeant. After being honorably discharged, Brennan attended Penn State University, graduating in 1985 with an associate degree.
Brennan resides in Lake Wynonah with his wife, Shannon, and their two children, Keegan and Grace.
Frank Gangemi
Gangemi, a 1987 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, was a three-sport athlete.
As a baseball player, he batted .400 in his junior season and was named to the All-County team. He hit .340 for his career.
Gangemi’s best sport was football. He was an outside linebacker on defense, a tackle on offense and a three-year letter winner. He was a team captain his senior season and was All-County and All-Anthracite in both his junior and senior seasons. In his senior season, Gangemi was the team MVP and named the Outstanding Lineman. He was also the Pottsville Area Scholar Athlete.
Luke Hoak
Hoak, a 1997 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, participated in baseball and wrestling for four years. He wrestled in the 160-pound weight class and was a three-time Schuylkill League placewinner. He was an All-Anthracite selection in his senior season.
In baseball, Hoak was mostly a pitcher. In his junior season, he had a 2.50 ERA. As a senior, he went 6-1 as a starter and reliever. He had two career shutouts and was named to the Pottsville Republican Herald All-Area Baseball First Team in his senior year.
Mike Welsh
Welsh, a 1998 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, played one season of football.
He excelled in baseball and holds or is very high on the records list of several categories. Welsh had an amazing senior season in which he hit .544, one of only two players to ever hit over .500 in a season. He has the most hits (43) and most RBIs (45) in a single season as well. Welsh was a three-year letter winner in baseball and was named to the Pottsville Republican Herald All-Area First Team in his senior year.
Welsh went on to have a successful baseball career at West Chester University.
He teaches at Pottsville Area High School is the head baseball coach after having been an assistant and learning under legendary head coach Jim Steidle.
Lauren Shandor Gibas
Shandor Gibas, a 1999 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, was a four-year member of the volleyball team where she was a setter and defensive specialist.
She was named team Player of the Year and first team for the Schuylkill League in her senior season.
Shandor Gibas was a coach for the successful Pottsville Area High School volleyball program.
Shane Clauser
Clauser, a 2003 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, was a four-year member of the cross country, track and field and winter track teams.
In cross country, he was a District 11 champion twice. He has the school record on the old Pottsville Area cross country course.
In track, he never lost a 1,600-meter race in four years of league meets. Clauser was the Schuylkill League and District 11 champ in the 1,600-meter run and had the most team points earned in track in four years.
Clauser established many course records at away meets as well.
Morgan Alisauckas
Alisauckas, a 2014 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, played basketball, track and field and softball for the Crimson Tide.
Her best sport was softball, playing four years at Pottsville Area. In her senior season, Alisauckas won many awards. She was first-team All-Area, first-team All-State and named third baseman Player of the Year. She was Player of the Year in the Schuylkill League as well.
Alisauckas went on to play softball at Mount Saint Mary’s University.
Scott Mattea
Paige Stoner Wood
Mattea and Stoner Wood also were elected to the Pottsville Area High School All Sports Hall of Fame this year. Due to prior commitments, they could not attend this year’s ceremonies. They will get their proper induction next year.
