Miller’s 5 TDs propel Spartans past Slaters
BANGOR — Things got a little interesting for North Schuylkill in the first half of its Schuylkill/Colonial Red Division game against Bangor at Memorial Park.
After building a 10-point lead, the Spartans gave up two quick scores and found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger just before halftime.
Wally Hall’s bunch rebounded, scored just before half and then dominated the second half en route to a 39-14 victory over the Slaters.
The win lifts North Schuylkill to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in Red Division play heading into Thursday’s showdown at Blue Mountain.
Luke Miller was the star for the Spartans, scoring five touchdowns on runs of 1, 6, 56, 28 and 44 yards. His 1-yard run and the first of four Gavin Mentzer PATs put North Schuylkill up 7-0 with 2:26 left in the first quarter.
Mentzer made it 10-0 with 9:08 left in the second frame with a 29-yard field goal. Bangor, however, returned the kickoff 95 yards for a score. After a North Schuylkill fumble, Bangor scored again, taking a 14-10 lead with 2:14 left in the first half.
The Spartans answered as Miller ran in from 6 yards out with 17.9 seconds left before intermission to give North Schuylkill a 17-14 lead at the break.
The Spartans then dominated the second half, scoring just 16 seconds into the third quarter on Miller’s 56-yard run and a two-point conversion run. He scored again on North Schuylkill’s next possession, then upped the margin to 39-14 with 7:50 left in the game on his 44-yard run.
