SHENANDOAH — Tri-Valley started the game well in its 42-10 victory over Shenandoah Valley on Friday in a Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Bulldogs did as planned in getting out to a quick start and posting two touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the first quarter to jump out to a 15-0 lead.
But Tri-Valley began to have concerns in the opening minutes of the second quarter when Sam Mentusky kicked a 30-yard field goal for the Blue Devils to cut the Dawgs’ lead to 15-3.
Mentusky later attempted a 58-yard field goal before halftime that fell short.
Shenandoah Valley again answered after a Bulldogs touchdown when Joel Nunez returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to cut the Tri-Valley lead to 21-10.
But in the end, the Bulldogs just had too much offensive firepower and responded with three unanswered touchdowns to account for the final score.
“I thought we could have played better in the second quarter,” Tri-Valley coach Jeff Sampson said. “We made some adjustments at halftime and did better in the second half.”
Tri-Valley posted its first score on its initial possession of the game on a 77-yard run by Parter Hatter for a 7-0 lead. Hatter finished the game with 111 yards on seven carries.
The Bulldogs upped the lead to 15-0 on their next possession on an 8-yard run by Cole Gemberling and a two-point conversion pass from Blake Schwartz to Lucas Schwartz.
Tri-Valley answered the Blue Devils’ field goal with its third touchdown on a 68-yard pass from Blake Schwartz to Doyle Flory; Schwartz completed 8-of-15 passes for 135 yards on the night.
Blake Schwartz then used his legs to produce the Bulldogs’ fourth score on a 55-yard touchdown run for a 28-10 halftime lead. He scored again on a 1-yard run in the opening minutes of the third quarter to extend the lead to 35-10.
Tri-Valley capped the scoring on its next third-quarter possession on a 1-yard run by Gemberling, who rushed for 112 yards on 11 carries.
Shenandoah Valley coach David Bench said that his team has kept fighting during a winless season so far.
“The older kids push the younger ones step it up and we did that,” Bench said. “But we came out flat in the second half. There are too many missed tackles on defense, and that’s been our problem all season long. We have to mix up the defense and put some younger kids in to get them more work. Hopefully we can improve for next week.”
