Pottsville, Marian score key volleyball sweeps
Girls’ Volleyball
Pottsville 3, Blue Mountain 0 — Ava Schwartz and Lainey Dusel each notched eight kills as the Tide swept past the Eagles 25-19, 25-20, 25-14 in a Schuylkill League Division I volleyball showdown Tuesday night at Martz Hall.
Dusel added 12 digs and two aces for Pottsville (9-0 D-I), while Schwartz collected eight blocks and eight digs. Lizzy Martinko contributed 12 digs for the Tide.
Jaedyn Bartholomew paced Blue Mountain (5-3 D-I) with nine kills and 16 digs, while Alexa Marshall had six kills and eight digs and Kenzie Staller tallied four kills and five digs.
Pottsville won JV 2-1.
Marian 3, Nativity 0 — Isabella Horvat paced a balanced effort with seven kills, 15 digs and two aces as the Fillies swept the Green Wave 25-21, 25-18, 25-8 in a Division II showdown in Hometown.
Maddy Davis added six kills for Marian (8-1 D-II), while Kali Grochowski had 12 digs and four kills, Caydense Smith had 16 digs and four aces and Eris Hayes had 23 assists and seven digs.
The loss drops Nativity into a second-place tie with Tri-Valley in the Division II standings at 7-2. The top three teams in each division qualify for the league playoffs.
Marian won JV 2-1.
Panther Valley 3, Mahanoy Area 0 — Morgan Orsulak collected 10 kills, 10 assists, eight aces and three digs to lead the Panthers to a Division I win over the Golden Bears.
Natalie Vermillion added 10 kills, two aces and eight digs for Panther Valley (7-2 D-I), while Caroline Breslin tallied 10 digs. Mahanoy Area (5-4 D-I) won JV 2-1.
Pine Grove 3, North Schuylkill 1 — At Pine Grove, Lily Flynn notched 17 kills and Domani Collazo tallied 16 kills, seven aces, three blocks and 10 digs as the Cardinals outlasted the Spartans 25-11, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15 in a Division I matchup.
Flynn added three aces and three digs for Pine Grove (5-4 D-I), while Molly Drumheller had 14 digs. Kyla Carado paced North Schuylkill (1-7 D-I) with six kills, four blocks and two digs, while Raven Marlow had nine assists and four aces and Brigid Flynn tallied three kills.
Pine Grove won JV 2-0.
Tri-Valley 3, Shenandoah Valley 0 — At Hegins, Faith Melocheck had nine kills and four digs as the Dawgs swept the Blue Devils 25-14, 25-13, 25-15 in a Division II match.
Callie Melocheck tallied five aces and 20 assists for Tri-Valley (7-2 D-II), while Ellie Dunkelberger had four aces and three kills.
Aubrie Monaghan compiled eight digs, four service points, five kills and two blocks for Shenandoah Valley (0-8 D-II), while Danna Chagolla had four digs, three kills and three blocks and Brittany Tafts collected six assists, eight digs, three kills and two aces.
Tri-Valley won JV 2-0.
Schuylkill Haven 3, Williams Valley 0 — At Tower City, Karlee Feger had 11 kills and six digs as the Hurricanes downed the Vikings 25-11, 25-21, 25-18 in a Division II match.
Jolynn Ross had 22 assists for Schuylkill Haven (5-3 D-II), while Teagan Wehr had 19 digs. Gabrielle Duprez paced Williams Valley (2-6 D-II) with three kills, three aces and four digs, while Brooke Beddia had three kills and four digs and Naomi Carl tallied seven assists, three aces and four digs.
Williams Valley won JV 2-0.
Minersville 3, Weatherly 1 — At Weatherly, Ayla Castle recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 18 digs as the Miners outlasted the Wreckers 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 25-13 in a Division II contest.
Camryn Colna tallied five aces, eight kills, two blocks and three digs for Minersville (4-4 D-II), while Hailey Bowers had two kills and 15 digs.
Rachel Rosenlund had 11 service points, 11 assists, four aces and two kills for Weatherly (1-7 D-II), while Abby Tedorescu had eight service points, four aces, two kills and four digs and Abby Weston had four service points and three kills.
Lourdes 3, Tamaqua 2 — At Tamaqua, Anna Keer had 12 kills and five aces to lead Lourdes past Tamaqua 22-25, 25-12, 12-25, 25-18, 15-8 in a Division I match.
Ella Kerris added four aces and five kills, while McKenna Moser contributed eight aces and two kills for the Red Raiders (2-5 D-I).
For Tamaqua (0-9 D-I), Madison Schock had 20 assists, five digs and three kills; Isidora Neifert compiled seven kills, five digs and two aces; and Kelsey Lusch chipped in six aces and two digs.
Tamaqua won JV 2-1.
Boys’ Soccer
Shenandoah Valley 2, Schuylkill Haven 0 — At Shenandoah, Caleb Campos made six saves as the Blue Devils shut out Schuylkill Haven in a Division II match.
Joan Menjivar scored on a penalty kick in the first half for Shenandoah Valley (12-1, 8-0 D-II). Carlos Meza, assisted by Ayden Zamudio, tallied a second-half goal for the Blue Devils.
Gavin Wade made 13 saves for Schuylkill Haven (7-5, 5-3 D-II).
Shenandoah Valley won the JV match 2-0.
North Schuylkill 1, Lourdes 0 — Brady Welker’s goal off an assist by Zack Marcinowski in the 85th minute lifted the Spartans (6-2 D-I) to an overtime win over the Red Raiders (2-4-2 D-I) in a Division I contest at Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium.
Kaden Onuschak made five saves and Lourdes’ Kyle Baranowski stopped 15 shots as the teams kept the ball out of the net until the first overtime period.
Minersville 4, Williams Valley 0 — Jordan Bowers tallied a pair of goals and Robert McGrath earned the shutout in goal as the Miners blanked the Vikings in a Division II contest.
Cam Rogers (15:04) and Bowers (37:00) gave Minersville a 2-0 halftime lead before Chase Zimerofsky (48:12) and Bowers (69:42) helped the Miners (5-3 D-II) pull away with second-half goals. Owen Mace had five saves in net for Williams Valley (3-5 D-II).
Blue Mountain 8, Tamaqua 0 — Shawn Batory, Blake Batory and Drew Waschko had one goal and one assist apiece as Blue Mountain cruised past Tamaqua in a Division I match at Tamaqua.
Connor Troutman netted two goals, and Hayden Freed collected two assists for the Eagles (6-5-1, 6-1-1 D-I), who led 3-0 at halftime.
Caden Wargo made three saves to post the shutout in goal. Nicholas Barron made 30 saves for Tamaqua (2-9-1, 1-6-1 D-I).
Blue Mountain won the JV match 5-0.
Southern Columbia 6, Tri-Valley 1 — At Hegins, Lukas Ruch scored off an assist by Garett Leitzel for the Dawgs’ only goal in a non-league loss to the Tigers.
Brayden Leese made eight saves in net for Tri-Valley.
In other Schuylkill League boys’ soccer action Tuesday, Pine Grove shut out Marian 8-0 and Weatherly topped Nativity 3-1.
