Schuylkill Haven runs past Mahanoy Area

MAHANOY CITY — After suffering an opening-week loss, Schuylkill Haven has recovered in resounding fashion.

The Hurricanes put together their third straight dominant performance on Friday with the outcome never in doubt in a 59-8 rout over Mahanoy Area in a Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division game at Coach Fazio Field at Alumni Stadium.

Schuylkill Haven never attempted a pass play against the Golden Bears as all of its 671 total yards came on running plays.

The only factor that was in doubt was whether the Hurricanes’ defense could record a third straight shutout victory. Mahanoy Area prevented that from happening when it posted its lone score with 5:41 remaining in the game on a 6-yard scoring run by Brian Gallagher and 2-point conversion run by Kyler Quick.

But that was after Schuylkill Haven had scored a touchdown on all eight of its offensive possessions through the third quarter.

“We’re pretty good and we’re just trying to get better every week,” Schuylkill Haven coach Mike Farr said. “I thought Mahanoy Area played really tough. But our attack is tough and just keeps coming at you.”

The Hurricanes’ offensive line consistently opened holes for Niko Carestia and Colton Reber, who gained 260 and 265 yards, respectively.

Carestia ran for five touchdowns on runs of 15 yards in the first quarter, 35, 42 and 21 in the second quarter and 31 in the third quarter.

Niko Castillo, who gained 91 yards, opened the scoring with a 17-yard run on the game’s opening possession. Reber had touchdown runs of 20 yards in the first quarter and 55 in the third.

“Our offensive and defensive lines have been doing a great job,” Farr said. “It’s not perfect but it’s been pretty good right now so we just have to keep working and keep getting stronger every week.”

The Hurricanes will have to get to work right away as they have a short week to work with for a Thursday night game at Minersville.
