SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — On the night when Schuylkill Haven celebrated the program’s 100th anniversary of high school football, the Hurricanes put together a vintage performance.

For the ‘Canes, that means they ran the football. And ran the football. And ran the football some more.

Grounding and pounding, Schuylkill Haven overwhelmed Shenandoah Valley 77-0 in a Schuylkill/Colonial Blue Division game Friday night at Rotary Field.

Prior to the game, Schuylkill Haven celebrated 100 years of football by inviting former gridiron players, coaches and managers onto the field to be recognized by the large home crowd. More than 100 former Hurricanes took part, stepping forward as the public address announcer called their decade. Schuylkill Haven’s first official football season was in 1925 and more than 73,000 players have come through the Hurricanes’ program, the public address announcer said.

Schuylkill Haven (2-1, 2-0 Blue) wasted no time taking control. On the first play from scrimmage, Niko Carestia raced 80 yards for a touchdown. He added a 14-yard TD run later in the first quarter and finished with 193 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Colton Reber also had a big night, rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries. He had TD runs of 52 and 55 yards.

Niko Castillo caught a 34-yard TD pass from Brayden Fasnacht and raced to paydirt on a a 28-yard run that made it 71-0 at halftime. Castillo also had three two-point conversion runs.

Schuylkill Haven senior captain Leyden Hertz had a huge night on defense and special teams. He intercepted two passes, returning them 25 and 27 yards, respectively, for touchdowns. He returned a punt 88 yards for a TD in the first quarter and set up another TD with a 66-yard punt return early in the second quarter.

“We’ve got big-play guys,’’ Schuylkill Haven coach Mike Farr said. “We have 3-4-5 really good backs. Leyden, unfortunately the split end on our team doesn’t get a lot of touches, so he gets his touches other ways.

“He had a really good night tonight,’’ Farr added. “I thought overall, our backs did really well. Up front, we made a couple more mistakes than I wish we would have, but it’s things that we’ve got to clean up.’’

In posting the shutout, the Hurricanes held the Blue Devils (0-3, 0-2) to 100 yards of total offense.

“Defensively, we’re definitely headed in the right direction,’’ Farr said. “There’s some stuff we still need to clean up. As far as the offense, it’s understanding our assignments and getting things done.’’
